Setting up a file server

You don't need to have separate drives, you could use just the 250GB.

Just have two folders in the root, one for SHARED and one for PRIVATE.

Give everyone access to Shared,

With the PRIVATE one, set another folder inside for each user. Then set permissions on these folders accordingly. Either make them Read Only to all users all lock them out completely. Only the owner will have full access.

Any users wishing to make a file available just puts a copy in the shared area.

The Private area is set as hidden and unavailable to other users.
In the Shared section each user has another folder I make this read only to all.
Finally in common everyone has full access.

Sweet diagrams Cypher! The reason I'm doing the partitions is two fold.

1) The G3 won't recognize the entire disk as it is an older Mac and will only see it as a 128Gb (137Gb depending on what your read) drive.

2) I have to partition it anyway so why not slice and dice it evenly between the 5 users. And then we all have an equal share. Keeps the kids in check!

I think I will modify my file structure a bit though as I like how you've laid yours out.

SIDE NOTE: what would it take to have this act as a Mail Server as well?

I've no idea what's available for the Mac, but on my PC network I had an application running for years called Mailtraq. This was a full blown mail server offering POP3 IMAP SMTP NEWS etc so it collected and sent all the mail & news from the internet, all the local machines where just set up to connect to it.

There must be cheap (or freeware) versions available for the Mac.

Running your own mail server almost isn't worth it when using something like Gmail for your Domain is free and easy.

Pop the 250GB Hard drive into a firewire enclosure ($25USD) and it won't need to be partitioned. Only hitch is, B&W G3's cannot boot from Firewire nor can they boot into Target Disk Mode.
