I'm sure this has been discussed over and over but I need to ask anyway. I'm curious what the current best 7200 rpm drive is for the Mini. I'm looking for speed, but I want it to be quiet. I am very happy with the stock 80GB drive in my mini for noise levels, but I need more room.

I'm currently looking at http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Hitachi/0A50940/ as a replacement drive. 200GB seems like a good size and it is 7200rpm.

Heat is another obvious issue, I don't want the fan spinning like mad because the drive runs twice as hot as the stock one.

The Hitachi 7k200 is a very good choice; fast and quiet. The Seagate momentus 7200.2 is a good choice as well though not quite as fast; that's the one I upgraded to (the 120gb version).

I installed the Hitachi 200GB in my MacBook. It is very quiet and there is no more heat than the original drive. I've had it installed for a couple of weeks now and I'm pleased with the performance and the extra storage. This kit came with a USB enclosure that you install the drive in, hook it up to your computer and clone your drive. When you are done, you remove the drive from the enclosure and install it in your computer. Install the old drive in the enclosure and you've got a back up boot drive. Being able to clone the drive before you install it was a time saver.

Where did you get your drive? I'm wondering if I should convert the old 80GB drive into an external or just sell it.

I picked it up at Best Buy:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8682222&st=travelstar&lp=2&type=product&cp=1&id=1197679249375

As I mentioned in my earlier post, this is an upgrade kit, it comes with a portable USB enclosure to Clone your old drive to the new one after which you can install the old drive into it. I keep it in my Laptop bag and use it as a travel drive. If you clone your drive to the new on first, the old drive can be an emergency boot drive if ever there is a problem.

I wasn't able to get anything from Bobaloo's link, but I have seen the Hitachi 200gb drives in Best Buy where they come in an external case that you can use if you install the drive as your replacement internal. If that's the one Bobaloo is referring to, make sure that what you are getting is the 7200 rpm model. It states 5400 rpm on the package and that's why the price is low. But some of them actually have the 7200 rpm drive in them. They have a different serial number than the 5400's; you can google this and get the number to look for. Unfortunately for me, I was recently in the States and went to two Best Buys near Niagara Falls/Buffalo to look for this. They had many in stock, but all were the serial number of the 5400 rpm drive.

Sorry, I didn't copy the entire link, it's correct now. What I have is the 7200 rpm, which has a 16mb cache. It is not installed in the enclosure, but it's a quick setup and then you can clone the drive. Pull it out, install it in your mini and if you like, put the old drive in the enclosure. Check online to see instore stock and if you are going to buy it, do it online and pick up in the store. I ordered it and picked it up a half hour later.

The Best Buy and OWC price are about the same, except that with OWC you get a $30 mail-in rebate. This kind of ticks me off about Hitachi; instead of making the rebates available wherever the product is purchased, they've offered rebates through only certain suppliers.

FYI, I found the serial number information on the Hitachi external drive sold at Best Buy. DTG or DEG = 7200rpm; WGN or WHG = 5400 rpm. Unfortunately, I no longer see the 200gb Hitachi external listed on Best Buy's website.

When I bought the drive from Best Buy, it was on sale for about $10 less, plus I had a $20 off coupon, os the price with tax was $161, I think. Keep looking to see it it goes on sale again. I didn't see anything about rebates, mine was just an impulse purchase since I had the $20 off voucher and after a mouse click or two, I bought it and went to the store to pick it up.
