I've always been a fan of linux and used it on and off. Couple of years ago, I switched fully from Windows to Linux. Now I am thinking of getting a Mac, to complement the linux machines that I have around the house.
I do like the Mac Mini, for two reasons. First, the small form factor and the fact that it runs the same OS that the powerful macbooks/imacs run. Second, the price of the machine for what I want to do and how I want to use it is perfect.
My plan is to cancel my cable tv subscription full out and replace it with the Mac Mini. Most of the television I watch is available online for free through the stations website. Some other documentaries and mini-series I like watching are also available online viewing for free. This way I can also surf the internet while in the living room on big screen, watch movies and such using the DVD drive.
I am hoping that (if and) when Apple releases a "new" version of Mac Mini they also equip it with a blu-ray drive. Wishful thinking, I know.
The biggest question of all is, should I get the mac mini now or wait a little bit more? A few forum threads indicate that the Mini might get a new processor and some other changes may be happening to its architecture!
Anyone else have any input/suggestions on my plan?

My first thought is, for what your using it for, would an update really matter? From you post we're only talking about streaming video and playing DVD's the current Mini is more than capable of those duties. Or did I miss something?
Otherwise, I wish you the best with your new Mac what ever it should be, and welcome to the forums!

Hi Puleen,
You're doing the exact same thing I did. I cancelled my digital TV subscription, sacrificing image quality of HD (until we get more OTA HD programming, we have nearly nothing here), since we were not watching it nearly enough anyway to justify the price. Now I just have the 'classic cable' for the couple of channels the kids watch (and they don't care about the quality loss).
So basically, I use my Mini as an HTPC like you, being able to access the internet and my home network. I also bought an EyeTV 250 Plus for the odd time we would want to record something. So like Hackersmovie said, I don't think there is a need for you to wait for the usage you want to make of it. Even if they do upgrade the Mini, I get a feeling it's not going to be for a number of months anyway.
If you want Blue-Ray (like I will want some day), I would buy a standalone player. I expect the prices will come down quite a bit at the end of this year since the 'format war' is over... |
