I'm thinking of using VMWare Fusion to install Win98 on my Mini. I'll only need to use it for a short period, but I'm worried what will happen if Fusion allows an unpatched copy of Win98 and a broadband connection to talk to each other.

Should I switch off my ADSL modem while Win98 is running to avoid an onslaught of net nasties?

I could be wrong here JB, but I haven't heard of net nasties effecting an ADSL modem while running Win98.

Nevertheless, an ounce of caution is always better than regret..

So for starters, you might want to download a firewall from this site.

http://www.thefreecountry.com/security/firewalls.shtml

then add a virus scanner...from the same site.

http://www.thefreecountry.com/security/antivirus.shtml

Other than those precautions, just wear gloves and use a condom... Razz

Thanks for the reply, Aqua. TBH I read a couple of articles about how vulnerable Windows PCs are if they're not patched and protected. This worried me because I know that Fusion, the clever thing, allows a virtual machine access to your broadband connection.

If you've got 4 or 5 minutes these BBC stories are real eye-openers:

I wouldn't see why it wouldn't work.

The only thing i would be concerned about is the processor bridge drivers remember when amd started releasing processors and microsoft had to produce a patch for windows 95 and 98 in order for it to function correctly under those processors.

You may have to do the same thing but i don't know of any updates to use dual core and the newer single core processors you can try.

If I'm not mistaken, didn't MS stop supporting Win 9x? You may not be able to get updates & patches, unless from some 3rd party site.

A couple of things to keep in mind. First off, if you are running Windows 98 behind a router, nothing can reach it to infect it, so long as it doesn't go anywhere untrusted on the internet. If you're using it for browsing, then you definitely need protection. If you're just using it for the sake of having Windows 98, then there's nothing to worry about.

As far as updates, Microsoft has stopped creating new ones, but the Microsoft Update site will still feed you all of the ones available up to the date of support cut-off. I just installed 98 in Parallels a couple of weeks ago, and got well over 100MB of security patches and such.

Thanks for the replies, fellas. I have managed to install Windows 98, but I've not made any attempts to connect to the net with it and - fingers crossed - I've not had any net-related trouble. VMWare Tools is very clever; it allowed me to simply drag an installer for a Windows app from the Mac desktop straight onto the Win98 desktop.

The only trouble was toward the end of the installation, when the installer program asked me if it could reboot the machine. In days of olde, I would have been wise enough to say 'no' and would have rebooted manually using the Windows 'Start' menu. But a long time has passed since I last struggled with a Microsoft product, and thanks to the intervening memory loss, I clicked 'yes'. Windows promptly froze up for a few seconds before totally bombing with the Blue Screen of Death. Oh, the painful memories came flooding back.... Crying or Very sad

Anyway, it's holding together long enough for me to get the screengrabs that I need for the current project. And once I've finished, I'm deleting that crap..... Twisted Evil
