But I'll tell you, I'm really **** pissed right now.

About 14 months ago, I picked up a Mac Mini to act solely as a music server (hardly a workout for any computer). At the time, I was quite excited to become a Mac user as I'd heard many good things.

Immediately after setting it up (~5 days or so), the thing starts to emit a loud, audible distortion from the audio outs. I call the Assle support line, they tell me to go down to the local Assle store and they'll take care of it. I won't get in to the shitty attitude on the zit faced twerp working at the tech desk... anyway, they replace the "mainboard", I take it home and guess what: No change still ****. So, I pack it up, take it back, fight to get them to give me new machine (which they finally do).

Like I said, I'm excited to be a new Mac owner, so I overlook this initial bad experience.

Well, after setting back up, ripping a bunch of CDs, I notice that the wireless network reception is flakey. Sometimes its there, sometimes not. Sometimes, if the planets are aligned, the signal is great. But it's not consistent. So, I go out and replace my old, DLink router (which was cheap even 4 years ago) and get what is rated as the best wireless router known to man.

Not much change, all the while my work PC notebook has no problem gaining reception at the same spot in the house.

So again, I take the Mac back over to Zitface. Guess what? He's not able to do anything other than tell me "it's able to connect to our network in the store...".

So back home I go... Set it back up.... Things improve for a few weeks. I'm happy. Not sure what happened, but I'm happy none the less. Until one day, NO SIGNAL. Nuthin. Kaputz.

Reboots provide me one of two things. Either it comes back and the NIC is disabled (don't know why or how, just is), or it comes alive and I have network but only for a few mins (like 3), then nothing again.

As an experiment, I moved the router, so that I can be sure signal is strong. And it is.... For a few mins... immediately after boot up, for about 3 mins. Then nothing.

And guess what. No more warranty. I won't spend another $10 on this pile of ****. I'll UPGRADE to a PC in a heartbeat.

APPLE = JUNK. DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE.

Oh yeah, I didn't even get in to the fact that the video out (although HDMI) doesn't scale to my HDTV properly... But a PC will.

Sorry for the long post.

If I end up having 1/2 the trouble with my mini in the 1st year as you experienced, I'll be sure to purchase the extended warranty...

My immediate thought to myself that I thought I'd share...

I'll probably buy it anyway because it looks as though you can buy it off of ebay for MUCH less than direct from Apple. To the point where it seems silly NOT to buy the extended warranty...

Just my thoughts...

You don't say much in terms of what you did to trouble shoot your issues. After your post I'm uncertain if there was an error with the set-up or if there was hardware failure.

If PC's work better and are easier to use then that may be the way to go.

Personally, both my mac minis have performed flawlessly for 3 years now.

Ha! Sounds like my first few experiences with women! Sure am glad I gave it another try instead of giving up and 'batting for the other team' though!

People tend to put Apples on a pedestal. I sure do like em better than PCs, but they are still computers, and they can, will, and do have problems. I guess if your'e happy with a PC, and it works for you, then more power to ya! They sure are easier to upgrade!

Personally, I think that anything that keeps me from having to deal with Microsoft is worth it.

Oh yeah, and AppleCare is a must. Keep your computer until AppleCare runs out, then sell it and get another new one.

Well, no problems with my mini and I've been doing all kinds of silly things with it. I've even upgraded components, which makes it highly likely to break things and mine is still problem free.

I am wondering if you were using things like a decent surge protector and if you put your wireless access point on a different channel than your neighbors. There are several things I can think of that would give these kinds of results with any computer. So, without any kind of trouble shooting or details all I see is a rant.

I'm just sorry to hear that your first experience with Apple/a mini was a bad one, jay.money. It does happen once in awhile, and it happened to you. I'm sure it's no consolation to hear from others that it isn't happening to them. I'd like to tell you forget about it and try again, but I don't blame you if you go back to a PC after your negative experience.

I agree, the sooner I'm away from MS the better. I bought my Mini used on Craigslist and while I have had some problems, I'm the one who caused them. Guess Macs are not for everyone and if you're more comfortable with PC's then good luck! But other than sharing you poor experiences, your post really had no value.

Hi Jay-

By any chance do you have an extended Apple Care warranty on your mini? if so, give 'em a call; if not sorry! Good luck Exclamation

While I haven't had the audio issues that jay mentioned, I have had wireless issues plague me over the years with various Apple machines, most recently my MacBook Pro. Like anything, they're not for all people, and not every one that comes out of the factory is perfect. Sometimes you just gotta throw in the towel.

I had audible distortion come from my Mini (PowerPC) from its audio out too. But that was more from ground looping, since they were plugged into different outlets. So I ended up getting a USB optical device for my output. I would assume that if you used the mini-optical output of the Mini (Intel), then that should get rid of the distortion. Just my opinion.

my mini has become more and more unreliable as well. My external hard drives constantly fall offline, I get locks up and freezes. My biggest complaint is my hard drives though. My itunes library is external, and within the last week i suddently get the message "device removed", then i look in finder and it's there but nothing can see it. takes a reboot to clear it up. Then it does it again later.

I've got one other external drive that is doing the same, and I've had it running on a win2k3 server box in my house for the last 2 days and it's not had a single problem.

I'm getting to the point of just reducing my mini down to a box solely for Garageband, and going back to PC for everything else. I'm still irked about the appleTV "upgrade", so i'm feeling pretty burned already.
