Fixing the bars on the left and right side to avoid burn in

Ok, i have a crt rear projection tv, and have ATV hooked up with component cables. It's currently set up on 720p. Does the screen resolution change the side black bars? I am not concerned with anything other than avoiding a burn in on the screen. Normally I am able to change 'pic size' on my tv, but it is not allowing it in the ATV screens.

Any thoughts on how to fix this? I'm bringing in video from my tivo to the pc, then editing out commercials with video redo, then converting to mp4 with handbrake with the appletv format.
