Microsoft today announced the release of Office 2008 for Mac 12.0.1, an update to its office software suite for Mac OS X. According to the company, this update contains several changes that improve security, stability, and performance. These changes include fixes for users of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, and include fixes for vulnerabilities that an attacker can use to overwrite the contents of a computer's memory by using malicious code. I'll have to look into that, meanwhile the install of the upgrade took forever here, I hope that is not an indication.
More to follow, once I have time to try it out. _________________ 2.5 GHZ i5 Mac Minu 8Gb Ram

I won't be able to download and try this until tonight, but I'm not optimistic. Microsoft didn't note startup slowness as one of their fixes. They did, however, list PowerPoint slowness at loading presentations as one of their fixes and I had noticed that. They also listed security fixes and fixes for unscheduled quitting. For those of you using Office 2004, there is an update for it as well. _________________ Mini 1: 2.3 ghz Core i5; 8 gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500 gb Seagate XT

Fox,
I don't think that it's going to fix any performance issues, either. As I mentioned earlier, if the install is any indication, performance is not improved. It was a long install here.
After such a long wait for this to be universal, it's a real disappointment. Not as bad as Word 6 was, but still, a disappointment. _________________ 2.5 GHZ i5 Mac Minu 8Gb Ram

Well, that kinda stinks. I just thought there might be a couple of noticeable things in there at 114MB. I guess this is Microsoft we are talking about though. |

I installed it last night on my mini and I can confirm that the update doesn't fix the slow startup issue. It does seem to load PowerPoint presentations slightly faster, but other than that, any fixes are for things other than speed. One other thing it must have done is replace all the major apps. I say this because of the time it took to install and because the custom icons I had on Word, Excel and PowerPoint (actually the 2004 office icons, which are nicer), changed back to the original ones in my dock when the apps were started up. _________________ Mini 1: 2.3 ghz Core i5; 8 gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500 gb Seagate XT

I just purchased a mac mini and have MS Office 2004. That is what I use at work so of course I need it for home but I really hate Word. Since I'm trying to switch to Mac I decided to look at some other options for document writing and I came across Nisus (http://www.nisus.com/Express/) I have to say I'm really liking this wordprocessor. It's fast and very easy to use. I can tell you that there are two things so far that it doesn't have: tracking changes and hmmm something else I can't remember right now. But over all for the money I don't think you can beat it.
2008 was too buggy from what I read on the internet and I wanted something different. |

Hah! I ran auto update and it did nothing but update auto updater to 2.01. after doing it's thing and d/l'g 114mb's I was still left with version # 12.0.0. I ran auto update again and it reports back that my software is up to date.
I'm d/l'g the update from Mactopia right now and I'll see if I can get it to work manually. _________________ Ich hab' keine Lust

Manual install worked! I am seeing a small increase in opening speed but it's nothing to write home about.
