I have a red Lacie brick external harddrive that I bought while I was living in Tokyo to save things on a computer I was borrowing. Recently, coinciding with nothing in particular that I can notice, it stopped spinning down.

In fact, periodically (every few minutes) it starts to spin up real fast as if it is loading or accessing something, then returns to idle. This is especially noisy and annoying to hear your harddrive spinning up and down all day, and I doubt it's good for wear and tear on the disk.

What's more, because the drive won't sleep, the Mini won't sleep. So, they're both on all the time. I use this harddrive between my Mini and my work computer, a De[[

I don't feel like going through Lacie support, as I've heard bad stories. Any advice? Thanks in advance.

It sounds like the hard drive or enclosure could have just failed in some way. You might try reformatting the drive to HFS+ from FAT32. By the way, are you running Tiger or Leopard?

I'm running Tiger, although considering upgrading to Leopard. Would either make troubleshooting the problem easier?

So, is this actually something that can be "fixed" through some sort of reformatting or something? I'll have to get another drive to put everything on during that process anyway though.

Has anyone had any success with this sort of fix?

Thanks
