I'm not yet ready to buy my Mini, but am thinking of going along to Amazon and buying an OEM copy of XP in readiness to install and play Counter Strike on the Mini.

Now, I know that M$ are going to stop licensing it to OEM manufacturers in June, and also to stop retailing it, (hence my intention to buy now) but can they refuse to activate a copy after that date...?

TIA,

Si.

MS can do what they want, for the most part, but i would not think they will stop activation, rather they will just stop shipping new copies, etc to OEMs and retail outlets.

All microsoft will do is stop shipping to OEM companies, they will not refuse to activate ANY of their software as that would only shoot themselves in the foot and stop potential buyers from buying their product(s).

Considering that a Mini doesn't exactly fall into the category of self built, am I likely to experience any problems using an OEM copy?

I don't remember how the lic. actually reads anymore but I always heard that you had to buy the OEM with some hardware. In the end, what truly matters is that you affix the label to the computer. An OEM copy is licensed to the machine it is installed on, you cannot install it on a different computer. Considering the price of it, this isn't all bad. You may also want to check out mwave.com for OEM Windows.

If it's not critical that you have it now, you might want to wait a while until OEM XP starts shipping with Service Pack 3 integrated. That'll save you considerable installation time.

Well, you probably can:

but you probably shouldn't.

I have multiple copies of XP home OEM and its fine. one is running on a I-mac and one on a Mini. Just make sure you get one with AT LEAST SP-2 or it wont work on your mac. Unless you plan on putting ALOT of memory in you Mini I wouldnt recomend VISTA. XP runs great.

My recommendation would be 1GB RAM for XP; 2GB RAM for Vista. You CAN run either with less, but you probably won't be happy with the performance.
