Steampunked Mac mini Setup
Monday, March 3, 2008

The Steampunk Workshop has posted some pictures of an interesting Mac mini setup created by Dave Veloz. It features a Steampunk-style keyboard, LCD monitor and Mac mini. The setup was apparently used at a wedding reception where it displayed a slide show of engagement photos. I'm really not that familiar with entire Steampunk computer movement, but the finish on the Mac mini looks pretty sweet. I would suggest that you head on over to the Steampunk Workshop for the rest of the pictures. They are definitely worth a look.

I always envy the Steampunk folks. They dedicate some serious time to their craft. _________________ MacMini 2.0GHz C2D (2009)

Wow, that's a damn nice steampunk setup. I like the treatment of the Mini, and that keyboard is great. I didn't see a mouse though... _________________ MacBook Pro 1.83GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD, Dell 802.11n card, 1.4TB external

That mini is really cool looking! The keyboard looks great too, but I bet that sucker is hard to type on. _________________ 14" 1.25GHz G4 iBook (died)

The keyboard isn't too terribly difficult to type on. I'm typing on it now! It does click pretty loud though. If you'd like some more detailed pictures then you can click here: http://s135.photobucket.com/albums/q133/david_veloz/Steampunk%20re-Make/ _________________ <END OF TRANSMISSION> |

Nice job Dave! The "Gearless Calculating Machine" wording was a nice touch. It's also nice to see that some woman accept steampunking as a hobby. |

That's the most amazing mini mod I've ever seen! Well done! I'm wondering though, what did you do for the mouse? _________________ 2.0 GHz C2D : 2MB RAM |

This looks really nice, but I think Khisayruou's Mac mini/Cube mod was better. |

OK, Dave, where do I get the kit to transform my Mini to look like yours! Just the mini itself....
Great job.

I got most of the graphics (the decorative corners, and boundaries) from iStockphoto.com. Unfortunately I can't post the pdf I created because it's against their graphic usage agreement. But you can purchase the files for about $10. The apple is a googled .png (but I can't see it anymore when I searched this evening, I'll repost filenames soon, that might make searching for them easier). Then just print it out and use double sided sticky carpet tape to stick it on. I painted the edges with some gold leaf paint from Michaels. I covered the very bright (what was it white?) LED with an orange Japanese peanut snack package that I was eating the day before the wedding.
I looked up images of old typewriters to get the right look and feel. There are a lot of beautiful old typewriters, with many different designs that would be worth exploring.
No mouse. Well I mean there is a mouse, but it's just a regular plastic grey one (which wouldn't have looked to good in the pictures).

Well I guess you've got your next instructions, then don't you!
Nice work, very well done, and Congratulations on the wedding. _________________ MacMini 2GHz C2D 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD| Panasonic TH-37PX60U | iPhone 3G 16GB

Thanks for the info, Dave.
I just might give this a try.
