PowerMac G4's are very cheap on ebay and I'm tempted to pick one up, add a SATA card and stick in a big cheap hard drive. I wouldn't buy one thats any older than the "digital audio" model and was wondering if I could get some feedback on wether or not it would fit the task.

Cheers trustory | Mine works fine. It's a digital audio g4 connected to my home gigabit ethernet. I have upgraded it to fast UltraATA PCI and FW800. Now, with my new MacPro (3 TB), the fileserver became somewhat obsolete.
Cheers
