In a very recent interview Linus Torvalds, (inventor of Linux) expressed his disgust with OS-X and Vista.

In particular with OS-X, he was quoted as saying that...

"OS-X's file system is utter crap"..

When I read this little opinion of his, several thoughts came flashing into my mind.

1. He also called the "Gnome" developers a bunch of " Interface Nazi's".

2. While he bags OS-X's File system, he seems to have nothing to say about KDE4's new File Manager (called Dolphin) borrowing heavily from OS-X file manager.

3. He is also a recipient of the generosity of Steve Jobs and Apple, in having been given a very nice Powermac (PPC) for zilch, nix, nadda.....

All of which leads me to conclude...Torvalds is not only an ungrateful sod, but that he is most definitely going bonkers..

Perhaps, the recent heatwave in Melbourne Australia, was too much for the poor guy. ( I note his previous outburst againt Gnome happened in the heat of Melbourne in 2005)...

It might also be, that orginal Penguin attack did more damage to his brain (Penguinitis tuxus) than first realised.

In any case, Linus me olde cupcake, if you read this, I imagine, Apple will have a Fedex truck backed up at your place, with a note saying that the driver is there to pick up one slightly used Powermac... Wink

Talk about biting the hand...that feeds you... Rolling Eyes

What next, a tirade against Redhat / Fedora...(you know, the guys who gave you $1 million for nothing)....?

I'm not too familiar with Linux lately, but has Torvalds provided anything of note to the community in the last 5 years? He seems irrelevant and mostly only makes tech news when he complains about something publicly.

Yep, Linus seems to have lost significance to the developers of Linux over the years. Newer and much cleverer developers have taken his crown.

All of which might explain his lashing out from time to time..

His life must resemble that of "Alexander Dane" who is perpetually forced to reenact his role as Dr Lazarus and attend "Galaxy Quest" conventions... Razz

Just one quick bit that seems very off.

File system != File Manager

and I don't know enough about HFS to comment.

I would not say that Linus has done "Nothing" to contribute to the success of companies like RedHat. That is actually a very amusing notion.

In a way the "File Manager" (in this case Dolphin) manages the "Heirarchical File System" underneath.

Like a cockpit control system controls the flying capacity of an aircraft .

As for his past contributions; of course, no one is disputing that.

It's only that now, he seems to have become little more than a obstreperous mouthpiece.

Torvald was asked whether he likes Windows Vista or Mac's Leopard better. After saying that overall he prefers Leopard, he says, "OS X in some ways is actually worse than Windows to program for. Their file system is complete and utter crap, which is scary."

I think he was referring to the programming environment mostly.

And he still plays an important part with the Linux kernel then other aspects of linux.

HFS+ is, at the very least, incredibly long in the tooth and needs to be put out of its misery. Perhaps we'll see ZFS soon?

AFAIK, Linus is still the care taker of the Linux kernel...having final say as to what is rolled in to the official code.

Lets hope so. As stupkid said its about the FS not the GUI. HFS is long in the tooth and its no longer the best, if it ever was.

Agreed. Actually I think ZFS & OS-X will have a beautiful future. ZFS is so incredibly flexible and deep... Its a file system for the 21st century.

Technically, he still is in charge. In a recent interview*** he stated that still does a lot of work in his basement, but nowadays he finds he is more of a figurehead and a negotiator / reviewer /arbitrator.

Don't get me wrong, I have a great deal of respect for him.

He seems like a cool, level headed guy; except when the wine seems to go to his head.. Wink Laughing

Cheers

It should also be noted that Linus (admitting this himself) constantly plays Devil's Advocate. When inquiries are made to him about this and that he will take a contrary position hoping to elicit debate. He might well have somewhat against HFS+ but you can be sure it isn't as deep a hatred as would seem. Of course he is bound to prefer his inventions and those of his community over others particularly over those not free and open source.
