Apple Announces 16GB iPhone and 32GB iPod Touch
Tuesday, February 5, 2008
Posted by: Glenn
Apple today added new models of the iPhone and iPod touch which have double the memory, doubling the amount of music, photos and videos that customers can carry with them wherever they go. The iPhone now comes in a new 16GB model for $499, joining the 8GB model for $399. iPod touch now comes in a 32GB model for $499, joining the 16GB model for $399 and the 8GB model for $299.
"For some users, there's never enough memory," said Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of Worldwide iPod and iPhone Product Marketing. "Now people can enjoy even more of their music, photos and videos on the most revolutionary mobile phone and best Wi-Fi mobile device in the world."
Both models are available immediately from the Apple Store.

It's cool that they bumped the memory, but I think $500 is steep for an iPod touch. I love my touch, but maybe not that much. Hey, that rhymes! |

I'll probably go ahead and get an iPhone now. That being said, I don't like how Apple is pricing these memory upgrades. This would put a 16GB iPhone at $599. I don't know if Apple remembers this, but I don't think the iPhone was selling that well at $599. I don't have anything against people paying for what they want, but I think most people out there want more for less, or at least for the same amount of money. I just don't like this pricing strategy or the new price points for the top of the line models. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

I bought my 16GB iPod about three weeks ago. I'm glad (in a way) there's been no price drop.
Of course I could always have returned it back for a refund and get the 32GB instead, but my old 3rd gen iPod was 10GB, so even 16GB is a major capacity increase for me. _________________ Mac mini 2010 (Core 2 Duo 2.4 GHz/8 GiB)

The iPod Touch is starting to look attractive to me with its expanded capabilities, but I was waiting for a shift in memory capacity. The availability of a 32gb Touch is a good first step. Now I'll wait for the inevitable pricing adjustment as the 8gb disappears and the other two units shift into the lower two price points. When that happens, I'll buy the 16gb Touch. _________________ Mini 1: 2.3 ghz Core i5; 8 gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500 gb Seagate XT

It's $499. I'm going out and getting one! Look out Apple Store, here I come! (A 100 bucks for double the memory, I think that's a great deal!) _________________ Automotive Digital Marketing

Oops, typo, I meant a 32GB model to match the 32GB iPod touch.
Yeah, I'll be heading to the Apple Store this weekend for a 16GB iPhone. See you there! _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

Reading comprehension.
Apple never went bankrupt. Even when they had some seriously bad years (1995 through 1997) they still managed to stay afloat. Certainly the $150M from Microsoft was a bailout, but they never managed to sink completely. _________________ MacBook Pro 1.83GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD, Dell 802.11n card, 1.4TB external

It is kind of strange that Steve Jobs didn't announce these at Macworld. He did say something that has me excited though. He said there were 50 weeks left in the year. Almost like we could expect something every week. Well, guess what? There has been a product announcement like every week or so since. I doubt that's what he really meant, but it would be cool. |

| I have been waiting for a 16GB iPhone for the last few months. I was really hoping Apple would just drop the 8GB model down to $299, and then price the new 16GB model at $399. I still want the extra capacity, but I'm going sleep on this one for the next few days. $500 is just a little more than I want to put into this thing. The AT&T thing doesn't bother at all. I'm already a wired and wireless customer. I might also want to hear what Apple says about the SDK and 3G. |
