|
|
while working today I somehow managed to get a few more desktop icons _ this is the oposite of what I want as the goal is to eventually get a clear desktop _ there are three icons I can't get rid of: ".DS_Store" (don't know where that one came form) _ then a little ball marked "Network" & anothere marked "Servers" _ I don't want to disable anything but moving them to the trash/eject buttons doesn't help as all three just come back _ _ _ any suggestions ? ? ? anyone ? ? ? _________________ dplace |

Try the Cocktail trial. It has a DS Store remover under the Files icon. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

You turned on view all files for the finder. I can't find how to disable this Terminal command right now, but I'll try again tmrw. _________________ Computer Engineer

is it the early hour or is Cocktail a strange bit ? _ it worked _ but the dialogue box says "choose" & there was nothing to choose from _ Cocktail brought up a finder window _ chose desktop but it didn't show the ds_store icon _ hit choose again & cocktail went bye bye _ not very obvious but it worked _ thanks _________________ dplace |

I found the Bash code:
| Code: | defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
killall Finder |
Type both of those lines into Terminal and then hit enter. This should reset the viewing properties of Finder so that the DS_Store files are again hidden as well as the network shortcut on your desktop.
As for using Cocktail to remove DS_Store files, those are files that store how you want to view folders, deleting them will return the folder view to default, like deleting cookies, they're just preference keepers, although unlike cookies, they're always preference keepers. _________________ Computer Engineer
