Anyone try upgrading the mac mini memory to 2 gigs? I dont know why Apple says the max is 1 gig... I know there is only one ram slot, but i dont see why they would cripple chipsets to not support anything over 1gig?

Thanks!

There currently aren't 2 GB DDR DIMMs available. I don't know if there is a limitation with the memory controller or not, but at the moment it simply doesn't matter. Any 2 GB DIMMs would be DDR2, not compatible with the Mac mini.

Update - Oops. The only 2 GB memory I use is DDR2. There are some 2 GB ECC Registered DIMMs available. I have no idea if those would work or not, but if they didn't, it would be hard to pin down the reason why - timings, memory controller, or some design limitation. Regardless, Aplle says its not support. I guess we're stuck with 1 GB. Smile I wouldn't call the Mac mini crippled by 1 GB max memory. That fits the target user and is consistent with thhe other design trade offs made for an entry level Mac.

I think Jason Snell from Macworld tried to install a 2GB stick and reported in an article that it didn't work...

I don't think that would fit in the Mac mini.

Neat idea... However, for starters, it is too tall to work in the mini. But most importantly, it ONLY will work on that motherboard. It utilitizes some unique feature of that chipset. (Says so on that page)

Hi,

You are right spoonman, but the article also means that we are getting closer to the 2GB adapter for the Mac Mini.

Why would an adapter that would allow DDR memory to work in DDR2 slots help Mini owners? I'm interested in running DDR in my DDR slots. The Mini might be able to use 2Gb modules with a small OpenFirmware update, if the hardware can support addressing 2Gb of memory through a single DIMM, though this feature is unlikely to be in the Mini considering I'm sure they were looking for any "pointless" features to drop to keep the price low. If it isn't supported on the mainboard now, don't expect adapters for 2Gb modules.
