Hello,

I am looking at buying a new iMac next month. Which screen is higher quality, the new iMac or the old white ones? I am looking at the 20" models and with the glossy screen aside on the new iMac, is the old screen a better quality screen? I will only be using this computer for typically daily use, i.e. surfing the web, email, iTunes, spreadsheets, etc. I am tyring to decide if I should buy the entry level new iMac, or an old white refurbished model.

Thanks!

Well there is a difference between the current 20" iMac screen and the previous generation iMac Screen.

Things to be aware of with the current 20" iMac screens is that the viewing angle is lower compared to the older screens but the I believe the contrast ratio is high as well as the "darks are darker and whites are whiter" thing with the new screen.

Honestly there isn't much of a difference with the new iMacs compared to the previous ones, they're speed increases are marginal. My buying advice would be to go for the 24" iMac if you can since it has the best screen and is a good all rounder as well as being a full 1080 resolution screen.

I believe the new 20" imac to have a poorly made screen. After viewing this video on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OoWtTozqFKU
So I went to my friends to checkout hers and I believe it to be true. The viewing angle GREATLY affects perceived colors on the screen. This could be extremely important to someone who needs an accurate screen. I've compared the newer "24 next to the "20 and the 24" doesn't have this problem.

As far as the colour changes with viewing angle I would say that youTube video Tony pointed to is pretty accurate of what I see on my 20" iMac

I don't see the wash out top to bottom though.

when viewing at normal viewing angles though the screen is superb.

Yeah don't get wrong, it is still a stunning screen. I just wouldn't use it for professional graphic work. For home use it will be perfect for your needs corsabrin.

I'm very disappointed in the quality of the new iMac screens.

1- reflection from the glass
This is something that some people have been able to live with, but for me it's annoying. Yes you can control your lighting environment but for some people that just isn't possible.
I typically drive 60,000+ miles per year. Wearing polarized sunglasses makes a drastic difference in how I feel at the end of a day. I shouldn't have to wear polarized sunglasses while using my computer. Now I may be getting a little carried away here, but for the people that say "you get used to it". I say nonsense. I rather not have to deal with it.

2- text looks blurry
If you look at vertical letter like the letter "i" on the new iMac they are very blurry. This is true even with the 24" model. This may be controllable by turning off font antialiasing. I haven't tried that yet, but I don't think it will make any difference on vertical letters.

Honestly I'd really like to say that I love the new iMac screen, but I don't. I think the old iMac screen is much better. If you're not too picky (like me) I'd say go for it. There are many people happy with the new iMacs. I like the looks of the new iMac much more than the old white model but you may be happy with either. You have to see them in person. Personally, I'll stick with my Apple Cinema Display and a mini.

I've never noticed the vertical letter issue on mine.

I do agree with you on the reflection point. Although I have gotten use to it and it really doesn't effect me now, I do know its still there and I am really worried that next summer, my room will get a lot more sun light and I may end up with an unusable display unless I close all the curtains and I definitely shouldn't have to do that. I've had my PC screen in the same location for years and its never been a problem, so Apple should have sorted this out before these screens were launched.
