Will anything that runs on Tiger run on Tiger Server? Because I know that stuff for XP didn't exactly always work on Server 2k3... but that was slightly different
I am starting to rely on my mini as a web browser and server more and more, and I'm curious as to what was changed for Tiger Server... I used to admin an Xserve G4 1U with an older version of Server

Windows XP and Server 2k3 are two different animals and are not built from the same code base, they are similar codebases but not the same. There are also a bunch of security enhancements that tend to break desktop applications.
Tiger and Tiger server are from the same code base (Darwin 8.0) and are identical for the most part. The relationship between them is less like Windows server and desktop and more like a Linux Distribution being able to be a desktop or a server, it comes down to the packages installed.
So yes it should be more than compatible with desktop software.
You can patch Windows2k3 server to run like a desktop if you want, removing the limitations to run programs.

All of the research I did can be summed up with homerjatmoes post. 
I replaced a Dell PowerEdge server that hosts mail/web for a bunch of friends with a mini and wasn't sure if I should run OS X Server or Linux on it. Ended up with Linux because of cost and my familarity with it, but I'll very OS X Server curious. |
