Tweaking the look of Leopard
Thursday, November 8, 2007

The Leopard desktop is a thing of beauty, but there might be a few things that you want to change from a visual standpoint. So here is a small roundup of applications for tweaking the look of Leopard. I'm sure most of these have been mentioned in the forums and around the Net, but I thought it would be nice to have them in one place. If you know of others, please share them with us. I also included a couple of tips down below for making changes from the Terminal. I would also like to encourage readers to send in a picture of their desktop for our photo gallery. Let's just see who is tweaking it the most here!

Thanks for posting this, Brian. You might add one more - TinkerTool, as it allows you to get rid of 3D effect on the dock, and does some other very useful things. It's freeware.
Dock Delight was good for me. I like the 3D effect but found the lights not contrasting enough to easily see which apps were running. _________________ Mini 1: 2.3 ghz Core i5; 8 gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500 gb Seagate XT

what i think would be a nice tweak is the ability to change the color of the menu bar, at least from white to black. and maybe the color of docklights...not just changing them from black triangles to blue glowing dots...like changing them to something a little more visible like green or red or something bright etc. _________________ Mac Mini 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo, Pioneer DVR-K06 Superdrive, 2GB Crucial RAM, 200GB 7200rpm HD

| There is a site called LeopardDocks.com that has a bunch of backgrounds for the Dock, but it really isn't an app so to speak. There is an app called LoginWindow Manager that could be used instead of Visage. I don't know if it supports Leopard yet though. I also had trouble with it in the past. |

First thing I did after upgrading to Leopard was replace the hideous login splash-screen. Suprisingly unclean and un-Mac in appearance, IMHO. _________________ 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Greg! Long time, no see.
Oh yeah, that purple galaxy background is really annoying. It also shows up with a lot of gradient banding on my LCD. I replaced it with a simple, no-frill blue. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

Carbon Fiber and Circuit look pretty neat. At least in the pictures. |

Yeah, I saw the same gradient banding on mine which was really distracting. If the image had been of better quality perhaps it wouldn't have been so annoying. Anyway, I found a nice picture of a Leopard (of all things) to replace it. The terminal/command line fix was simple enough. _________________ 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

This was on my G5 iMac and with an older 20" Samsung. Not really the greatest of displays. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)
