I was, until I saw the price, the ides is nice and would be nice to have one of those with the RAM maxed to 2GB, but the SDD really drives up the price. _________________ "You must control your future by taking command of your present, and fixing and learning from your past."

Yep.
But watching it go from a pre~release price of "UNDER" $200.
to $400... has kinda made me think twice.
The chip / clock speed isn't ever gonna set the world on fire; but at least it's portable.
As for the screen size.
I think the 7" screen sitting in that fat 10" surround, makes me feel that Asus are being tight-a*rsed about the whole exercise.
It's not as if they couldn't afford to drop in a bigger 9" or even 10" screen.
If they upgraded the screen size, I would seriously consider buying it.
But until then, I'll pass.
Besides which, the Apple Mini-Note-Pad-Thinga-Me-Jig (US version s called a Whatcha.M-Call.it) that is alleged to be in the pipeline, might make for a better 'investor..ment'.
Cheers

I thought that this little machine was absolutely fantastic. I pictured myself installing an outliner program and being able to work on projects wherever I went.
Then I saw this in the 'Features' FAQ on the Research Machines (UK distributor) website:
Q: Can software be added to the set that come with the miniBook?
A: No, as the interface has a fixed number of icons which launch programs or go to web addresses.
Bye bye, outliner program. _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b

But I think you can install Ubuntu or even Windows XP on it, no? You could probably install all of those built-in apps plus some. |

It's intel?!?! Why not run Linux instead.... |
It actually sounds like it has a peppy little Intel Dothan-based Pentium M CPU. I could be wrong, but isn't that what Apple uses in the Apple TV? |

Weee, HackersMovie, you're absolutely right.
Here's a reviewer installing Gutsy Gibbon: http://community.zdnet.co.uk/blog/0,1000000567,10006278o-2000331777b,00.htm

Well, if I want to get one of these (Yes I do!) I had better find out which outliner progs are available for Ubuntu and start to learn a little bit of Linux (groan). _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b

Sweet links! I was wondering how much space would be left after an Ubuntu install. It looks you have just over 1GB left. I guess you have the SD slot to play with though. When is the 8GB model coming out? |

| I wouldn't mind having something really small like this to bring out to my workshop. The low resolution screen might get a little old though. I guess they went with the smaller screen to keep costs down. But it looks like they have room for a 10-incher in there. Is there talk of other models? I haven't been following it. I just saw it mentioned on Gizmodo a few times. |

Well you know the good thing about Linux is it can run on just about anything, from mainframes to thumb drives.
Another good idea may be to install a minimum installation with a light weight window manager instead of gnome/kde, and add what you would need once you get wifi working. _________________ G4 Mac Mini | 1.25ghz | 1gb | 40gb | OS X 10.4.11 | 37" Westinghouse HDTV

Weee, Devo, the best source for information and links that I have found on this machine is this Wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ASUS_Eee_PC
Ghostdawg - is the relationship between a window manager and Linux the same as Win 3.1 and MS-DOS? Am I on the right track here? _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b

Ahhhh, crap. Asus have done a deal with Research Machines to distribute in the UK. RM have been a company that sells to schools and colleges since the 1980s, and they still are:

I take it all back. I typed 'Asus Eee PC' into eBay, and if you're willing to pay the right price..... _________________ Intel Mini 2.0GHz C2D (4GB/120GB/SuperDrive/10.5.8 ), 120GB WD Passport, Logitech ergo k/b
