I'm thinking about getting another Mini to act as a HTPC. I currently have an i7 2012 mini for my main PC, but I want to dedicate one strictly for a media server. I have a 4TB raid that will be attached and the Mini will connect to my new Panasonic Plasma.

I'm going to hook up my existing mini to the TV to make sure every works correctly before buying a new one.

My question is since I'm not going to do anything fancy on it, should I just buy the low end i5 vs the i7?

You should be able to use any Intel mini that is at least a Core2Duo, and at least 2 GHz.

One with a built in HDMI port would be better than one without.

I recently started using my 2009 low end mini (2.26ghz) for HTPC; works fine and has the added advantage of having an internal DVD player.

I'm still running my Mac mini 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB memory, 320GB hard drive, connected to an external HD for media storage and still love it. It hasn't given me any problems, and performs very well. It connects to a 40 inch (I think) Panasonic plasma TV. Incredible picture quality.

I think the mini is the late 2009 model, so it's getting long in the tooth, but you'd never know it. Or at least I don't. Smile
