I have created an online Petition for people to look at and sign if they agree.

It's basically asking Apple to provide free upgrades to Mac OSX 10.5 Leopard for people that have recently purchased an Apple computer - unfortunately there are lots of students for example from around the world that had to buy their computers in September for example because that's when they're most needed and who couldn't wait maybe 2 full months for Apple to release their new OS when it suited them.

http://www.petitiononline.com/leopard/petition.html

Apple provide 90 days of free support so I'd say at the very least people who bought their Mac's 90 days before Leopard comes out should get a free upgrade .. Although if Apple were being generous I think they'd back date it even further.
Very Happy

This is the wording of the petition

http://www.petitiononline.com/leopard/petition.html

To: Apple Computers

We ask Apple to provide FREE updates to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard for all people who recently purchased an Apple Computer wherever they might be located in the world.

We ask Apple to respect the fact they themselves have delayed the roll out of their new operating system not because of problems in developing the system but because they removed key personnel from the development team to work on other projects within Apple.

We ask Apple to recognise that both loyal and brand new Apple computer users from around the world have been put in a difficult position and had to endure months of uncertainly over their decision on whether to purchase an Apple computer now or wait until an unknown release date has been announced for the new operating system. A decision which especially for students starting a new term at schools, colleges and universities around the world in September would have meant sacrificing their education to have waited for Apple's delayed operating system to come out.

We ask Apple to "Do The Right Thing!"

Sincerely,

The Undersigned

It's not about doing the right or wrong thing, it's about money. If they thought it was profitably advantageous to them they would have announced this a long time ago.

Making money can be view both long term and short term - when you buy a PC you know you have a certain amount of freedom in your purchase - you can have the hardware you want - the software you want

When you choose an Apple Computer your choices are strictly limited - Apple being both the provider of the Hardware and Software means the customer's expectations of the overall service to the product and the way in which you'll be treated are much higher.

If Apple want to encourage more people to switch to Macs then they need to consider this - if Apple was purely about making money why did they offer $100 rebate on iPhones to early adopters.

I think they were only offered a $100 credit with Apple, so, they get to keep the money anyway. After reading other comments about this rebate, not everybody is happy about this.

But, if they do upgrade for free, do you think I would qualify, I bought my imac 20" in December 06. I was sure Leopard was due to be released last October........

They did it for a few reasons, I'm sure. There might be some legality involved, also, as Bibamus already said the money is going to go back in Apple's pocket anyway. I understand what you mean, but the point is, they've still in turn feel they're going to profit from giving the rebate.

Now let me ask you something: If Apple WASN'T purely about making money, what else are they in it for? Why do YOU work?

Customer satisfaction is important, but turning a profit is even more important than that (in their eyes). As a customer, we have a right to purchase another product if we don't like what Apple is offering. Smile

Just to give my opinion Smile

I won't sign any such petition. People are getting ridiculous. I knew that Aperture and the iPhone generosity would set a precedent for people to whine about all future product upgrades.

Apple is a great company. However, the more Apple gives the more people expect. This type of generosity is never "expected" from other companies. To petition a free Leopard upgrade is ridiculous. Apple clearly states their sales policy. You have the choice to either buy or not buy their products based on that policy.

Why? What student assignment can only be completed with Leopard that can't be done with Tiger? Confused

I THIRD that!
What kinda SISSY BABIES are the parents today breeding!
Let me get this straight you started school about a month ago and bought a new Mac?
Wasn't it enuf that you got a $199 ipod for FREE?
Wasn't it enuf they gave you a $100 credit towards a printer?
Wasn't it enuf that you got a student discount?
Not to say that when it does come out you'll also benefit from a 10% discount.
But all of that ain't good enuf for you sniffling trolls!
I guess if Apple did like they did when they released Tiger and charged people who bought machines like I did right before its release(I'm not posative if they had 30 day or 14 day prerequisite) a $9.99 shipping charge. You'd cry too!!!!

I'd also like to know what school, college or university REQUIRES you to have a computer for School? Let alone that it has to be an APPLE?
I think the OP, anyone who signs such a petition, or who disagrees with me, should start a class action suit in Supreme Court suing their Parents for all their pain and suffering, for being born a DEE DEE DEE........maybe some Judge will even award you all a Lifetime supply of Ritalin.

I don't understand the connotation between the iphone and Leopard?
what does dropping the price have to do with releasing software?
The computer and its hardware/software industry is volatile.
Go out today and buy some ram its 1/2 the price a few weeks from now.
I bought a 500gb HDD 15 days ago at BB for $150 this weeks special id $99. Same 33% price reduction. hey it's 15 days later, do I have the the right to go back to the store for a refund? and do they truly owe me one? Your brand new car depeciates 10x more that an iPhone did the second you drive it offa the lot.

Boo Hoo Hoo

Besides, Apple is not an open source company, even though it uses open source software. It's in the business of making money.

When I bought my mini in March '05, I think a couple months later Tiger came out, and I was a little pissed that I couldn't get a free update.

One solution I took and still have is, I haven't bought Tiger to this day.

I FOURTH it?
Very little about Leopard will make people switch unless they need the BootCamp Assistant or want the time machine (both my reasons for waiting).
