QuickerTek Intros 802.11a/b/g/n Wireless Upgrade for Mac mini

QuickerTek has announced a new 802.11 upgrade kit for Intel-based Mac minis. According to the company, "this upgrade provides 802.11 a/b/g/n compatibility for complete wireless network freedom. The upgrade also has an external antenna for 'a' wireless as well as three antennas for MIMO wireless, which enables the Mac mini to easily reach top wireless speeds not previously possible on accessible networks." The kit includes the high-speed 802.11 upgrade card, external antennas, cabling, tools and illustrated installation manual. Users can choose to buy the kit and install it themselves for $149.95, or send their Mac mini to QuickerTek to have it installed for $199.95.

| There is a piece of this that I'm not understanding. 802.11n is the newest and fastest and bestest (so we're told) wireless connectivity at the moment. So, assuming thats true, why install a new device that still does a/b/g, why not just 'n'? And this thing obviously isn't as simple as plug 'n play and its darn ugly (although I bet its probably a lot more reliable than anything thats completely internal) but, if you're going inside anyway, why not just do the 'n' card upgrade (yep, I do realize there are some issues getting it to work properly on a Mini, atleast there were last I heard). |

I don't see any unless you need to connect to an 802.11a network. But don't forget, this card also includes supports for 802.11n/g/b. So you basically have support for all the wireless standards. It also costs less than their 802.11/b/g/n card and seems to come with a more substantial looking antenna. That seems like a good deal to me. |

Agreed. I only meant that it's a good deal in relationship to the other card. It's still an expensive proposition. |

All wireless network devices are always backward compatible. Otherwise you would be facing problems if you want to use the system elsewhere.
Besides that: I wonder who would be willing to pay 150,= for a rather limited usefull upgrade. |
