Use SuperDuper to clone your drive. Then go into system preferences > Startup Disk and select your firewire drive. Go back to system preferences > Energy Saver and check put the drives to sleep when possible. Your external drive will go into sleep if you leave it on all the time with this checked. Turn on your external drive first when you go to boot up. If you're using the Mac mini for a server go into Energy Saver > Options and select restart automatically after a power failure. That's about all I have to offer! |

Ok I ordered the external drive. I look forward to doing some benchmarks to see if the extra money spent was worth it.
I do have another question about building the new install, and that is to do with partitioning. The disk is 250gig so for best performance how should I partition it? Right off the bat I'll be adding 120gig worth of home movies and mp3's..
Thanks! _________________ mac mini 1.42/1gig ram/bluetooth/

Set up a 40GB partition for the OS and applications use the rest for your movies and files.
If you are going to be importing home movies and making DVD's, it would be best to set aside a partition for importing and manipulation.
It should look like this:
40GB OS X
210GB Files
You can use your internal drive for mp3's as they are less demanding than video.
Please post your benchmark results after you get the new drive. _________________ 1.42Ghz

Sounds good and I'll post the benchmarks as soon as possible. The mini is arriving at my folks on the 4th and then they are express shipping it to me in New Zealand so that will take another 3-5 days. By the time it gets here I'll already have the external disk. _________________ mac mini 1.42/1gig ram/bluetooth/
