Roxio today announced the release of Popcorn 3, a new version of its video conversion and disc burning software for Mac OS X. The latest version of Popcorn comes with innovative time-saving features that streamline and simplify workflow as well as universal video conversion and encoding technology optimized for the broadest selection of devices including iPhone, iPod, Apple TV, BlackBerry, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 compatibility and exclusive TiVoToGo and EyeTV support. With TiVoToGo support, consumers can now easily transfer their favorite TV shows to their Mac, create DVDs or move them to a portable device of their choice for on-the-go viewing. Popcorn 3 is priced at $49.99. Upgrades from previous versions of Popcorn and Toast cost $29.99.

| Anyone on here using Popcorn yet? I've been told this is a more reliable converter than Handbrake, but I haven't had a chance to play with it yet. |

I've been using Popcorn 2 for a while. It won't rip encrypted DVDs like HandBrake. In fact, Popcorn 2 is having more and more trouble turning my MTR rips into DVDs. So I find myself using DVD2one more now. I'm not going to bother upgrading to Popcorn 3. That being said, it's still handy to have around. I would consider buying it if you don't have it. What are you looking to convert for? |

It's pretty amazing that freeware is sometimes better than commercial software. This often seems to be the case for OS X software. |

Ty there must be some major differences being Popcorn and Toast are both by Roxio. |

Sorry, I was referring to Devo's comment on DVD2OneX. I have used both, and Toast Titanium seems to compress and burn my DVD's quicker than DVD2One. |

I saw your post last night. Chalk this one up to boredom, curiosity (never really timed them) and the need for multiple copies of the same disks. These are MTR rips coming off a Micronet drive via firewire.
Disk 1 (VIDEO_TS 5.69GB)
Toast 8 Titanium (main video and main audio): 14:54
Popcorn 2 (main video and main audio): 16:58
DVD2one (best quality): 16:11
Disk 2 (VIDEO_TS 7.23GB)
Toast 8 Titanium (main video and main audio): 29:25
Popcorn 2 (main video and main audio): 31:13
DVD2one (best quality): 22:40
Nothing else was open on the mini while they were compressing and burning. I just left it sit there. BTW: I have a 1.66GHz mini with 2GB of RAM.
I would bet that Popcorn 3 speeds are more like Toast 8 with the newer video compression engine. But DVD2one already seems to hold its own against Toast 8 and then some. |
