Toshiba today announced the world's first 320GB 2.5-inch HDD, as the lead product in a new series of 5400 drives. The company also expanded into the high-end 7200 RPM performance class with a family of products offering up to 200GB capacity. Toshiba's new 5400 RPM 2.5-inch HDDs feature capacity points from 80GB to 320GB, using both 120GB-per-platter and 160GB-per-platter designs in the MK-46GSX and MK-52GSX families, respectively. The high-end 7200 RPM MK-49GSY series features capacity points of 80GB to 200GB. All three families support the Serial ATA interface at a 3.0 Gbps data transfer rate, and free-fall sensor options are available on select models. Toshiba's new HDD families will begin production in the fourth quarter of 2007.

Didn't they announce a 300GB one about 9 months ago? I still haven't seen that thing available on retail websites...

I could be wrong, but I think that was Fujitsu. And it was only 4200RPM.

But who will get to 500GB first?

I have a feeling that it will be Hitachi.

That sounds more like it. Thanks for the clarification.

Dag gummit!

I just bought a 200GB 7200 RPM drive for my MacBook Pro.... and when I say I just bought it, I haven't even installed it in the laptop yet. Grrr!

Ahh well, I still have 15GB free on my 120GB, so I should still be good for a while, although I don't have any of my iTunes library on my MacBook, they still reside on my PM G5, library is just too large, sitting at over 200GB now. Very Happy

Yeah, but I've heard that 200GB Hitachi is pretty sweet running at 7200 RPM. I'm thinking about moving up to one from a 160GB 5400 RPM WD.
