I don't think there will be new iPods as long as they have that free deal going on for students.

They replaced the iPod mini with the iPod nano during the free deal and didn't allow you to get them free, just $179 off.

i think that the final chance that mac mini will be upgrade is the release of Leopard, maybe we should until release day of Leopard.....

Do Apple broadcast these announcements live across the net, like some streaming QT movie, or do we have to wait until after the event to learn the news?

What normally happens is reporters blog real time. You can get live, line by line updates from a number of news sites. Then Apple releases a QT video after the event.

Okay, so the reporters are blogging events back to their news sites as-they-happen. Can you mention the names of such sites on 123MacMini, or would it be considered bad mannered to do so?
