LaCie today unveiled the triple-interface Big Disk Extreme+ with LaCie Shortcut Button and included EMC Retrospect backup and recovery software for Windows/Mac OS. The storage solution is equipped with FireWire 800, FireWire 400 and USB 2.0 interfaces, as well as a utility that allows users to back up files or launch any application by pushing the front blue button. The LaCie Big Disk Extreme+ is offered in 1TB, 1.5TB, and 2TB capacities. They are available immediately online and will be widely available through LaCie's specialized dealer network later this month starting at the suggested retail price of $350.

Nice. I always thought lacie's stuff was overpriced. $350 is a good deal though. The WD 1TB drive is $100 more. It does have the network access option though...
It's still blowing my freakin mind how cheap HD's are getting.

Me too. I've just got into computers when I got my Mac mini, and even since then the prices of hard drives has decrease, and the performance has increased. I hope the same goes for all computers and computer peripherals. |

My 320GB LaCie d2 is starting to feel more and more tiny. I could see the 1TB model in my future. I can only dream about having the 2TB model. It's a little out of my budget. I could always buy two 1TB models for $150 less though.  |

That's what I would do. When 1TB simply isn't enough, just buy another to double your storage capacity, and save money also. |

Not bad. Costco has the WD 1TB for $349. I'd rather have the Lacie. I just fried my first WD 500gb. It's nice to see Lacie pricing more competitively.

How much is Lacie getting the 1TB HDD's for though since cheapest I've seen on a single 1TB HDD is around $400 so they must be getting a good price on their 1TB HDD's if the market comparison makes it $800 for 2x 1TB drives and $50 for the Lacie case, yet the 1TB is $110 more than market price of 2x 500GB HDD's.

I just bought a 1TB WD MyBook Pro Edition II last week, so of course another product comes out today.
The WD MBPE2 isn't what I'd call silent either. The two drives make a very loud humming, especially compared to the silence of the Mac mini.
I'd say that it's even louder than my Mac mini and its two miniStack. |

That is surprising since the 500gb mybook is really quiet. Unlike my harrier jet the ministack.

What type of RAID are you trying to set up? By the way, these drives have built-in 0 if you didn't notice.

There are a lot of unhappy LaCie d2 owners that would disagree with you. They've had their fair share of issues with this style of enclosure. Fortunately, I'm not one of them. My LaCie d2 Extreme has been a pleasure to own. I don't know off hand about the length of warranty WD offers with the MyBook drives, but it looks like LaCie stepped up the warranty with these models to two years. That should make you feel good.

That's an interesting point. You have to remember that LaCie is buying in super large quantities. Their prices are way below what you or I could get on Newegg. It's kind of hard to put a value on these things, but I think the 1TB is decently priced. I'm sure it will be discounted even further on the major shopping sites.

I'm always amazed with how quiet the Mac mini is compared to other enclosures. It can make anything seem loud, even a 2.5" drive in a portable enclosure for example.
What type of warranty did your WD come with? |

I'm a fan of LaCie products, but I would want a drive that had built-in RAID-1 at 2GB.

Mine are quiet too. I also have a LaCie mini and it's very quiet, maybe even more so than the MyBooks. I wonder if these Big Disk Extreme+ drives run on the noisy side, because they have a fan? A lot of the people on here complained about the newer 500GB LaCie mini with a fan being loud. |

I'm not trying to set up any type of RAID, I know nothing about it or what the different types of RAID are. Thats why I said I need to get it figured out one of these days. I eventually want to run a couple of drives (most likely Mini Stacks if I get another Mini and nothing better comes out before then) to use as a media center and for back-up purposes. Such that they would back each other up so when one fails, the exact data is contained on the other disk.
I've obviously got some learning to do. But its nothing I'm going to do in the immediate future, so theres no huge hurry. |

Yeah I've got one of the newer 500Gb LaCies and the fan noise is ridiculous. Just running normally its fairly loud but pretty often it picks up speed and sounds like a light aircraft taking off (I may be exaggerating slightly)  But it is seriously loud, even when watching a movie or listening to music you have to turn the volume up loud to drown out the noise.
