Hey all. Is anyone using an Apple TV with a normal 4:3 tv? I have an old sony with no component inputs, only composite. I know there are converters available, but will I be able to view my 16:9 content in its proper aspect ratio, or will it be stretched? Apart from altering my content, is there any way to do this?
I bought an Apple TV this morning, there's a guy on eBay with 9 left, all sealed, for $249 shipped, compared to $315 from the Apple store. I bought it even though I might not be able to use it right away, but I'll likely be buying a TV pretty soon that will support the Apple TV. |

You'll need a component -> S-Video converter. And no, there's no aspect ratio setting. As you say, encoding with the wrong aspect ratio is the only way to get the right aspect ratio back at playback, unless your TV has a widescreen mode.
Mine doesn't. I was hoping this update would add a "TV type" setting, but no luck.

The AppleTV assumes you have a 16:9 screen, so yes, 16:9 content will appear stretched vertically on a 4:3 screen. And 4:3 content will display pillarboxed, making things squeezed horizontally.
The only workaround I've found is to re-encode everything with the wrong aspect ratio (i.e. re-encode a 720x400 movie to 720x304) so that at playback it gets stretched back to the correct aspect ratio. |
