Not exactly, thr recommended distance for optimal performance of an external drive is 2 meters. Keep in mind that with distance there is loss of throughput, and a complete contradiction of what is trying to be achieved, a faster mini.

Europeans use commas instead of a period for decimals. I had to take a second look myself.

Converting SATA to PATA defeats the purpose of SATA altogether. Once you convert it, you're then dealing with the bandwidth limitations of PATA. Right?

The purpose is to get a clean external harddrive installation while being on the PATA internal bus. The other benefit is to be able to put the drives in a RAID configuration.
The SATA cables are easier to route through the case and are smaller than any PATA cables available.

Ahh, gotcha. I agree it would be cleaner, but as far as speed you wouldn't gain anything over a PATA drive.

As far as having it hooked up to a native SATA bus, it wouldn't matter. The difference between SATA and PATA for comparable drives only shows up during peak thoroughput, which happens very infrequently and for far less than a second. Other than that, the advantages for using SATA is the actual features it gives, not how fast it goes. NCQ and clips on the much smaller cables do it for me. If you dig around the forums I posted more info on SATA vs. PATA I think.

Paul,
It seems from your initial post that when you finish the installation, the case of the mini would be close, correct? If that is the plan, where would you squeese the SATA cable through, the vent holes? Or do you have to leave the case open like that of the person who connected the IDE drive directly?
Finally, is there any way that one could connect the IDE drive without leaving the case open and without using an enclosure?

He was going to put the sata cable through one of the vents or remove the modem and use that hole.

Yes, use an IDE laptop drive. No, there is not enough room, that is why he is trying out an external SATA drive.
