Please respond with the version of OS X you are running.
Note how you installed OSX, clean install, update etc.
Note anything out of the ordinary (room temp, items stacked on top or below etc).

I never called Apple or heard of anyone who has yet.
It will be interesting to get a few more responses.
I thought mine was silent with 10.3.7. I've since updated 3X. 10.4, 10.4.1, 10.4.2. I didn't do a clean install from my Tiger CD. Which I could do because I have a Tiger CD with nothing else on it from the update program. (I was told by my Apple rep that it is the same version as the one you buy off the shelf.)
I may try a clean install, after a few more responses. |

Clean install of Tiger DVD here.
external temperature: about 28 degrees celsius.
The fan starts to spin, after reboot, but not at the highest speed.
Off topic: i changed dsl router, and now cpu utilization is down to 3-4%.Before, it was 15-20%!
Could it be that ethernet hogs cpu?

thank you for posting this topic...ive had the same thing happening
1.42ghz w/ 1gig ram
it came with 10.3.7 and i updated to 10.3.9 then realized i had the tiger install disk that came with it and subsequently updated to 10.4 then 10.4.2
no fan running (or quietly running) with 10.3 but when i installed 10.4.2 it became noticably different
let me know if clean installing helps out!
EDIT-also, how hot is the bottom of your mini? i picked mine up after turning it off this morning and it was pretty damn hot...

You are welcome and even though I created this thread, you can take credit for it Blackjaw. When you first posted your observation I thought it was all in your head. Then you got me thinking... Then, I wondered if it was all in my head.
Usually an upgrade improves things  .
Has anyone contacted Apple on this issue?
The bottom of my mini doesn't get very hot, because of the ugly printer stand I keep it in. It sits upon a paper drawer, which has holes in the bottom of it allowing the air to flow quite well.
I'm not going to do a clean install, just yet, as Kadronarxis did a clean install and his/her fan is running with no applications running. I'll wait to get a little more info.
Good troubleshooting takes time. I don't want to throw in too many variables, until I get a bit more info.
P.S. Is there a utility that tells you your fan speed and mini's temp. etc? |

I wonder if Apple didn't adjust the fan speed in 10.4.2. Maybe they thought it was running to hot. It's not really louder or annoying, but it's noticeably more active. I tried resetting the PMU to no avail.

thats what i was thinking, perhaps they planned it
but then again, perhaps they didnt...the mini was running fine for a majority of people since jan/feb

Fine according to who? It is entirely probable that Apple adjusted the fan settings because they were concerned about how hot the Mini could get with its current temperature control. They might've wanted to increase the cooling to keep it more inside safe operating temperatures. That makes sense to me, but sometimes it's hard to see why Apple does things.

| When I'm doing something processor intensive (like running a bunch of apps or a flash website or heavy duty graphical game), it will kick in and you can hear it more loudly than normal. Also, since I leave my machine on 24/7/365 most of the time crunching BOINC/SETI@home packets, whenever the BOINCsaver kicks in the fan kicks up because the processor is set to use 100% of it's resources for crunching packets. Takes about a hair under 6 hours to complete a data packet and send the result. Been running this since day 1 of the mini's release 6 months ago (to the date), with what appears to be no adverse issues. |

No
I honestly can't hear a thing from my mini (unless I stick me ear right up to the rear of it). I just got shipped in from China on Wednesday and it came with 10.4.2 prloaded. In saying that, I have not had anything intensive running on it yet!

What kind of readings are you guys getting? I get 93.2 F.
By the way I came up with a fix for the fan noise. Crank iTunes up to 11!
