I have Mini I use as a household server, as well as my primary machine at home. I leave it on all the time, without going to sleep, but I have the system preferences set to spin down the hard disks after 30 minutes.
The machine has two exteral firewire enclosures. The first, a Maxtor, happily spins down when it's supposed to. But the second, a Vantec NexStar 2 FW enclosure, ignores the spindown command and keeps running. (It's also not bootable). I've read online that some firewire enclosures don't fully support these features.
I know the miniStack is bootable, but does it support spindown commands from the system while it's running? (I know it spins down when you poweroff the Mini). |

Considering it works with Greg's Seagate, I'm sure its more of a question of whether or not the actual hard drive supports it and not the miniStack. _________________ Computer Engineer

The drive with the spindown problem used to reside in the Maxtor enclosure, where it did spindown properly.
I'm sure the particular model of hard drive is a factor, but in my case there's a definite difference between the enclosures. I was looking at the miniStack as a replacement for my lame Vantec enclosure, as well as the USB hub I have connected to the Mini. |

The seagate in my ministack spins down as well... can't remember if I set the HD spin down in the energy saver panel or if it is built into the HD....
EDIT: Just FYI... I do have the HD spindown set in my system prefs... _________________ Mac Mini 1.42GHz

I am not booting off of the ministack right now. I am actually content with the speed of the machine overall, so the HD speed isn't an issue for me at the moment. But to answer your other question, Go to your System Preferences, then Energy Saver. There is a check box to "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" I have this checked on mine. It would be nice if you could be more specific as to which drives (i.e. internal vs. "removable") you could apply this to.
Hope that helps.... _________________ Mac Mini 1.42GHz

Thanks. That's interesting. Something about putting the boot drive to sleep worries me, i.e. that if you do, it'll drop off the desktop. Not a problem if it's simply an external drive, but if it's also your boot drive, doh!
Anyway, when the ministack comes back I'll try that...
Thanks!

When I first received my miniStack I booted off of the external for a while just to test. The Energy Saver sleep settings were in effect and did not have any negative effects. _________________ 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
