Hi,

Has anyone had problems with using 5.1 powered speakers with macs and mac mini in particular. I only receive 3.1 sound when i plug in through the Headphone port I previously had an imac G3 and had the same problem. Anyone know of a solution or am i dumb??

For 5.1 you'll need an external audio device like these:

or

There are a number of external USB or FireWire devices you can use.

With some speakers, like my mom's Logitechs, there is an option to upsample stereo audio to 4.1 or 5.1 audio. If you want true 5.1, follow Greg's advice.

Like Greg said you will need a 5.1 adaptor. Unfortunately the mini is only stereo. That was something that almost drove me to an iMac.
