Roxio today released Crunch, a software application for quickly and easily converting computer-based video entertainment for viewing in the living room through Apple TV. Supporting a broad range of personal video content including DVD-Video, MPEG-1, MPEG-2 and DivX files, Roxio Crunch uses "powerful compression technologies and straightforward settings" to format video for optimal playback. In addition to converting files for Apple TV, Roxio Crunch also enables users to view their favorite content on the road with predefined options for output to iPod and the soon to be released iPhone.
"Apple TV, iPod and iPhone are part of a new wave of devices that provide consumers with a broader range of options for how and where they enjoy their personal entertainment" said Vito Salvaggio, vice president, Mac Business Unit, Sonic Solutions. "We are pleased to offer consumers an easy way for enjoying all their video content on these exciting new Apple devices."
Roxio Crunch provides the following features:
- Converts native QuickTime file formats, such as DV, AVI, MOV, and MPEG-4
- Converts non-QuickTime file formats, such as MPEG-2 and DivX
- Converts DVD movies and discs created with Toast, iDVD, DVD Studio Pro, and other DVD authoring applications
- Offers multiple MPEG-4 and H.264 quality settings tailored for use with Apple TV, iPod, or iPhone
- Automatically adds converted video to iTunes library for easy syncing with Apple devices
- Includes batch video file conversion
Roxio Crunch requires Mac OS X 10.4.9, 256MB RAM, 50MB of free hard disk space for installation and up to 15GB of temporary free disk space during usage, QuickTime 7.1.5 or later and iTunes 7.1.1 or later. It is available for download at an introductory price of $40. A dual-platform Mac and Microsoft Windows version will be available at retail stores later this quarter.

| I don't think this is needed with HandBrake, but I still wouldn't mind giving it a try. It's a shame that Roxio doesn't offer trial versions of their products. Let's say that Crunch rips 3X faster or does something better than HandBrake. I might be interested then, but how would I know? |

| I'm with Weee on the trial aspect. Maybe they could release one that is limited to 5 minutes of video, or a single chapter of a DVD? |

| Maybe Roxio should consider bundling all these goodies with Toast. As mentioned there is so much good shareware and freeware available that individual commercial apps are rarely needed. A convenient all in one, seemless bundle would make it a little more attractive to purchase. |

Most people use HandBrake to rip encrypted DVDs. You cannot do that with this product. You would need to run the DVD through MTR and then attempt to convert it with Crunch. There goes your time savings (if there was any) right out the window. Here's another thing to worry about. I don't know if you've used Popcorn, but it hasn't been working out that great with certain movies lately. I find myself using DVD2one more and more these days in place of Popcorn.

I was just about to say the same thing. That being said, I wouldn't be surprised to see them add these features in Toast down the road. A bundle with Popcorn might be another possibility. To be honest, I just don't see Crunch being that successful on its own. |

There is probably a place for this in retail right next to the ATV at Best Buy or CompUSA.
The market being those who don't know what's out there is shareware/freeware. |

Keep in mind that Crunch uses the built in Quicktime to encode videos. There would be ZERO speed improvement over using "Export" in Quicktime.
I personally find that Handbrake does everything I need, and rather quickly, too...

I think I'll continue to use HandBrake for DVDs and iSquint/VisualHub for everything else.
