Just what is Dell's "own" machine (a logo?). Again Dell does not manufacture anything. If they do make me aware.
Dell assembles machines. Other companies manufacture the components.
I'm just using Dell as an example because they would be a good company for Apple to partner with. Especially when Intel chips are used to run OSX. Buying a Dell that runs M$ and OSX would be a lot less intimidating to many people.
Apple could have an agreement with Dell that Apple must supply all motherboards, cases etc. whatever Apple feels suitable. If OSX is going to be installed on a Dell box.
Allowing OSX to run on any Intel chip or beige box is another story all together.
I'm just saying keep an open mind. |

Yep, in fact I think that's the whole premise of Dell, they were hot stuff because they sold computers so cheap. And the reason they could do that is because everyone knows it's much cheaper to build computers from 3rd party parts.
But we all know that didn't last long, now people pay more to have the four letter word "Dell" put on their computer, and pay out the wazoo for their shoddy tech support than what could be put together for $100's less.

I agree with you, Mavherzog. Dell has a large price/performance&features ratio. Any computer manufactorer will be more expensive than building it yourself, so don't compare them to homebrew boxes.
Also, if you factor in the time it takes you to deal with assembly and what parts to use and so on and how much your time's worth, then the prices would be quite comparable.
