HandBrake 0.8.5b1 Released
Saturday, April 21, 2007
Posted by: Charles
HandBrake has announced the release of HandBrake 0.8.5b1, a new beta version of their popular DVD to MPEG-4 converter. This is the first release since the HandBrake and MediaFork teams merged into one. New features in this version include: User presets, AAC 5.1 and Dolby Pro Logic II surround sound, Apple TV and PS3 support, Chapter Markers, High Profile H.264, and more. A number of bugs have been fixed as well, including the restoration of multiple audio tracks. The complete change log can be found in this PDF file. The HandBrake 0.8.5b1 download weighs in at 15.2MB. Their website is rather busy at this time, so be prepared for a slow download.

Nice move with presets and chapters. They must be really busy as I can't download either.
If any manages to get it, Upload it somewhere like yousendit.com |

When someone has sucessfully D/L this and has tested can they report back about the chapter marker option?
Does this mean you can rip a DVD down to mp4 and retain markers for navigation say in Front Row?
I hope so!! _________________ Intel 2.4Ghz/4G Ram/1TB HDD/Server MacMini

I just started the download. It took about ten minutes for it to show up in the Safari Downloads window. I'm only going at 5.5 KB/sec now. I'll let you guys know how it turns out next year. I'm excited to see how these chapter markers work out though. |

I'm downloading it now, and...It says I have about 6 minutes to go. I'm downloading at 33/34 KB/s. Anyways I plan to rip a DVD (Some DVD anyways) and I'll give ya a report on the chapter markings...I hope it seriously does work for DVD videos because, hookin that into iTunes and putting it on your iPod...that's handy, and I've been wanting that for a while. _________________ 1.66Ghz Mac Mini, 80gb Hard Drive, 512mb RAM(Soon to be upgraded to 2gb). 20" Widescreen Dell Flat-Panel, Panasonic Stereo Sound System, Apple Wireless Keyboard/Mighty Mouse. 30gb Black iPod Video. |

Granted this is a beta version, but I'm wondering if anyone has the same problem as me: HandBrake is always on top of all my other windows.
Other than that, I'm glad to finally see an update after all this time. HandBrake is the one app that allows me to use my AppleTV.
Edit: the "always on top" bug happened when running HandBrake from the mounted .dmg image but is not present when running from the applications folder.

I just finished ripping my first move to MPEG-4/ACC. The chapter markers seem to work in iTunes, but not Front Row or QuickTime. _________________ 1.83GHz Mac mini with 1GB of RAM |

From this day forward, you shall be known as HandFork. I dig the new presets and chapter markers! It's really good to see this project come back to life. I had a feeling those Forkers would pump some new blood into it. |

I tried this last night by ripping an AVI H.264 with AC3, The audio track was missing and the video didn't play. Im going back to the last version as that worked. I'm disappointed that chapters do not work in quicktime as I use FrontRow to play back movies. The only thing that would be useful is the presets but since I can't output the format I need this is useless.
Can anyone confirm AVI H.264 with AC3 doesn't work. |

Anyone here having a problem when you've loaded the DVD and none of the functions work?
I went on to the forum on HandBrake, it seems that it is affecting macs with a G4 processor and running 10.3.9. _________________ - MacBook Pro, 15inch, 2.4GHz, 2GB, 160GB HDD, SuperDrive. I Love this Mac!!!!

Do you have an AC3 codec installed? as I'm pretty sure that combo should work. _________________ MacBook 1.83Ghz C2D, 2GB Ram, 160GB 7200rpm HDD, OS X 10.6.5

I'm doing a sample rip now and my mini is acting weird!
First, I'm a CD1.66, 2GB of RAM, and having it save the file to my firewire drive.
I pulled up istatpro, and my CPU usage is SOLID, and my fan is running at 2749 RPM, and it running at 63/69 degrees!!
To the best of my knowledge, she's never run that hot before!! |
