On my old Windoze box, Bit Torrent planted all sorts of Spyware B.S. on my system.
For that reason alone, I shy away from anything having to do with BT.
I don't know what it does on a Mac........ |

It downloads files and that is pretty much it... (well, it certainly acts as a proper BT client and uploads as well during the process) _________________ -=iMav=-

Installing BT did that to your PC? Are you talking about just the actual BT software or a GUI frontend like Azureus? I use both without any problems; the key is to not download illegal stuff. _________________ Computer Engineer

| I had installed BT on my old Windows box, and when I ran a couple of Spyware cleaners, there were things ALL OVER the place....farming tools, redirectors, among other things. |

You mean just the BT "drivers" or an actual frontend? I find it hard to believe that installing just those drivers or a trusted frontend would do that. Either they were there already or you were downloading something else that you shouldn't've. _________________ Computer Engineer

No porn. No warez. No music. I used it to for game demos.
Ask yourself WHY do you need a so called "frontend" to download files?
Hmmmm.....?
So maybe they can sneak things in on you? Track where you go? Just maybe?
Otherwise. what is its true purpose?
I am suspicious of any crap like BT. |

This is from THEIR terms of use page:
------------------------------
What information does BitTorrent collect and how does BitTorrent use it?
Gathering and Use of Anonymous Information
Each time a visitor comes to a Site, we collect some limited information that your browser makes available whenever you visit a website to improve the overall quality of the online experience, including product monitoring, product improvement, and targeted advertising. This information includes your Internet Protocol address, browser type, browser language, the date and time of your query and one or more cookies that may uniquely identify your browser.
In addition to collecting these types of information, BitTorrent collects aggregate queries for internal reporting and targeted advertising. We also count, track, and aggregate the visitor's activity into our analysis of general traffic flows at our sites (e.g. tracking where traffic comes from, how traffic flows within the Sites, etc.). To these ends, we may merge information about you into group data, which may then be shared on an aggregated basis with our advertisers; but BitTorrent will not disclose your individual identity or personal data without your permission.
In the event that you provide us with answers to voluntary survey questions, we may present this information to our advertisers and partners, in the form of grouped statistics compiled from our users' answers to such questions.

Sure as hell sounds like Spyware to me. |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like they're telling you what they're doing with the information from their web servers logs.
If you visit my website, I can tell your "Internet Protocol address, browser type, browser language, the date and time of your query and one or more cookies that may uniquely identify your browser", all without installing spyware on your machine.
And if I was on the ball (which I most definately am not), I could even have targeted ads on my site pop up for you based on the information that I collect from you.
AFAIK, the BitTorrent client is absolutely positively spyware free. There'd be a heck of a fuss if that ever changed. |

FWIW..
http://www.bittorrent.com/FAQ.html#spyware
| Quote: | Does BitTorrent contain spyware, adware or viruses?
No, BitTorrent contains no spyware, adware, viruses, or any other kind of malicious software.
Some warez sites are distributing spyware-wrapped versions of the BitTorrent installer. Please only download the BitTorrent installer from this site.
It is possible for content downloaded using BitTorrent to be infected. The risk is no different than Internet Explorer. To avoid this problem, don't download from websites you don't trust. |

I use Azureus as a BT frontend and it's totally free of malware. I don't know where you pulled that Terms of Service from, but it's not BT's and Azureus doesn't have a ToS.
I also agree with Atistobrat in that it sounds like they are culling information from their server logs. This is not unusual and doesn't actually affect your computer. _________________ Computer Engineer

That is from THEIR website.
You guys are WAY too trusting.........
Read the part where it says:
"To improve the overall quality of the onlne experience".
I can make my own decisions on the quality of my own online "experience" and not feed information to someone who knows what's "best" for me.
No BT for me. I see ABSOLUTELY NOTHING in it for me.
What's in it for YOU? |

| As for it being Spyware free, maybe its just on Windows. On my old PC, when I ran AdAware and Spyhunter, they both came up with files that were connected to BT. Harmless? Maybe......but maybe not.........either way, I didn't like the fact that they were there. |

I can't find the word improve in that entire document, let alone that phrase. I searched that entire ToS for what you've quoted as well as "To improve the overall quality of the onlne experience" and there's nothing there.
What's in it for me? Fast downloads of a lot of things, like things from Blizzard.
As for people on the internet deciding what's best for you, capturing demographics from site visitors is nothing new. It's how webmasters work; they use these demographics to determine if they need to work on making their site viewable in a certain browser or changing the content from Java applet-based to Flash because enough people visit with Flash installed.
Also, I'm running BT on my laptop here right now. This laptop runs Windows and I haven't had a problem with AdAware besides tracking cookies and remnants of past malware regkeys.
An example of malware files that are BT related would be nice to see. _________________ Computer Engineer

Try here:
Same site, different page.
http://www.bittorrent.com/privacy.html
That is where I got the quote in my post earlier about the ONLINE EXPERIENCE.
Regardless, I couldn't begin to see anything BT would offer that would be of any benefit for ME. My downloads are blazingly fast with cable modem, as is.
And.....sites that require proprietary "front ends" to download anything, are highly suspect, in my opinion. Blizzard really does that?
Nothing personal, but I think you are being quite naive, if you think its for OUR GOOD that anyone tracks ANYTHING that we do on the internet. |
