New Mac Mini, no video

I convinced my Mom to switch on the grounds that "it just works" and much to my chagrin it doesn't. Got a USB Microsoft Wireless Desktop keyboard/mouse and a Sharp LCD monitor, using the included DVI-VGA adapter.

I already tried resetting the PRAM and nothing changed. I also tried a CRT monitor and using a DVI-HDMI output to my HDTV but never got any signal. I spent a long time on the phone with tech support and he kept pointing to the keyboard as the problem but I have my doubts. I'm from the PC world and used to BIOS... would it "hang" if it didn't detect a keyboard? I'm waiting on an Apple keyboard now but I don't think that will fix the problem. I get the chimes and I hear the drives spin up (and possibly spin about 10-20 seconds more) but that is all I get.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I can boot my mini without a keyboard or mouse hooked up. Why they would blame it on the keyboard????? I think you have bigger issues with this system. I would return it and get another.

Why don't you just boot up without a keyboard or mouse? If the display works then, you know it was the keyboard. Personally, I don't think it will. I recommend returning it like g5g5 said.

Another option would be to try another DVI-VGA converter or to try a different monitor and see if that's the problem.

If you can't do any of the above options, just return the thing.

does your display have any auto-sync buttons? because if you used the display before, it might have its setting accustomed to your pc, try pressing the auto-sync button if your display has one (mine does)...

You need to have a wired keyboard for the initial bootup of the comptuer. After that, you can use your wireless. This is documented on the apple website.

It turns out I had a faulty DVI-VGA converter. I got another one and plugged everything up and it went fine, Microsoft wireless keyboard and all.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that MS actually made Mac software to go with it.

There's a division of Microsoft called the MacBU (for Business Unit) that makes only Mac software. Believe it or not, the very first version of Word was a Mac version. Apple is one of Microsoft's oldest customers.
