|

Looks like someone figured out how to add XviD support to the AppleTV (warning, linked site is a forum known for some crassness).
They're using the Perian codec, and a QuickTime reference movie. It also sounds like DivX, and other Perian supported formats will work too. _________________ MacBook Pro 1.83GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD, Dell 802.11n card, 1.4TB external

There have been other very simple methods of running XviD without hacking TV. I've got to run, but Google before you hack
There's a thread on Macdailynews where a guy explains his simple method. |

I didn't see the thread either.
I can't wait to get mine and start hacking around with it! |

The only thing I saw on MacDailyNews was an excerpt from the same forum I linked directly to. _________________ MacBook Pro 1.83GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD, Dell 802.11n card, 1.4TB external

I'm all for an easier way. To be honest, I'm not that familiar with Dropbear. I could probably tweak it out though. Have you ever messed around with it before? |

I've never touched dropbear, but I can fake my way through most stuff
Though not having an AppleTV, nor getting one in the foreseeable future (Wii first, AppleTV later), this is just me viewing from the sidelines for now. _________________ MacBook Pro 1.83GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD, Dell 802.11n card, 1.4TB external

Here's what I read:
"All you need is quicktime pro, then just download the divx plug in for apple. Open your avi file in quicktime, then just select export and there will be a selection to export to apple tv. Did it yesterday and was watching ghost rider on my projector with apple tv." |

While that's certainly a valid way to do things, it's not playing the XviD/DivX file directly on the device, it's playing an MPEG4. By re-encoding, the video is suffering a quality loss, plus it can take a lot of time. _________________ MacBook Pro 1.83GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD, Dell 802.11n card, 1.4TB external

| I got you. Is there a significant loss in quality? |

There's no definite answer to that. It depends on the quality of your source, the quality of the QuickTime encoder, the settings, the quality of the TV you're displaying it on, and finally, the quality that the AppleTV can produce. _________________ MacBook Pro 1.83GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD, Dell 802.11n card, 1.4TB external

I hear ya. I think there are a lot of people sitting on the sidelines when it comes to the Apple TV. I'll probably reorder one soon, but I would still like to hear a little more info about the SlingCatcher. |
