Briefly: Apple TV Drive Upgrades [Updated]
Tuesday, March 27, 2007

As most of you know by now, Engadget and Apple TV Hacks have both published guides on how to upgrade the hard drive in your Apple TV. I was able to successfully upgrade the hard drive in our test unit over the weekend. I can report that it was an easy upgrade, and that our Apple TV continues to work properly. That said, I'm sure there are people out there that would like to have more internal storage without attempting the upgrade on their own. This is where the new Apple TV upgrade service from iResQ looks to come in. For a fee, iResQ will pickup your shiny new Apple TV and have one of their Apple-certified technicians install the hard drive. The upgrades will be performed within 24 hours of receipt at iResQ's repair facility in Kansas City, and they provide each customer with the appropriate shipping materials and pre-paid labels to safely transport the units around the country. Pricing is $199 (80GB/5400 rpm), $229 (120GB/5400 rpm), and $259 (160GB/5,400 rpm). This also includes overnight pick-up and delivery. As you can see, the service doesn't come cheap, but it is another option. I would also like to mention that iResQ offers a similar upgrade service for the Mac mini. More information about it can be found here.
Update: TechRestore is now offering a similar upgrade service for the Apple TV. Pricing is $99 (60GB), $149 (80GB), $169 (100GB), $179 (120GB), and $219 (160GB). More information can be found here.

| Being that this upgrade is performed by Apple Certified Techs does it keep the Apple warranty intact? |

i'm going to assume that
1. apple is not cool with this upgrade and therefor techrestore will be hearing from apple.
2. It will void the warranty when you go into the apple store to get a restore should the drive crash.
In my opinion there is already so many resources for the tv that you can fix it yourself if you have an issue. I will upgrade my drive when I get my tv in the next 2 weeks. _________________ ______________________________________

I should have all my stuff by the end of the week.
There is more good news. It doesn't look like iPartition is required anymore. You can supposedly put the new drive back in and do a factory restore from the Apple TV. I'll let you know how it turns out. |

AppleCare Warranty Note: If you have iResQ perform an upgrade or repair on your Apple TV, your factory Apple Warranty will remain in tact as you purchased it from Apple. However, any new parts installed by iResQ will not be covered under your Apple Warranty, they will be covered by iResQ.

I could be missing something, but I don't see anything about warranties on the TechRestore site. I would bet that it's the same.
It's pretty cool to see that a few companies jumped on this. Apple probably should have offered BTO hard drive upgrades in the first place. I guess there is always the chance that they will enable the USB port for external storage though. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

| Great. But as you can see from the hard drive utility. It doesn't run a version of os x but a modified version of os x for media. cant wait for someone to figure out how to hack it to enable use of alternative operating systems and more media support. |

My 120GB hard drive won't be here until Monday now. I hate you DHL!!! Their online tracking is the worst. The shipping info has only been updated once since the package was shipped from California. It was supposed to be delivered by 3/30. I was so looking forward to doing the upgrade this weekend. |
