Hey Gang,

I've decided that I'd rather have an iMac instead of my Mini, so I'm going to be making a purchase soon. The trouble is that I've just got my Mini set up perfectly the way I want it. Since they are both Intel Macs, can I just use SuperDuper to clone the Mini's HD to a USB drive, and then when I get the new iMac, just boot from that drive and clone it o the iMac? What would be the down side of doing that? If that won't work, what are my options for getting the new iMac set up?

Chances are likely that you'll be able to clone using SD just like you want. However, if there are issues, you can always use Apple's Migration Assistant, which is a part of 10.4.

Hey thanks for pointing to that migration assistant. That looks like the ticket! Will that transfer everything, like all of my installed programs, wife's accounts, and what not? Anyone ever used it before?

You have broad, but not fine-grained, control over what it'll transfer. For example, you can transfer applications, or not, but not pick-and-choose which applications you want. You can transfer selected portions of users. The last time I used it, I didn't have multiple user accounts, so I'm not sure from personal experience how it handles those. But it does a good job.

I've seen some posts claiming that transferring stuff between a PPC something and an Intel something sometimes transferred things that might better have been not transferred, but PPC-PPC or Intel-Intel shouldn't have that problem.

You may still need to reinstall a few applications, but it does a pretty good job of automating what otherwise would be pretty tedious and time-consuming.

I used it recently to transfer from my flower power iMac to a G4 Mini, and it does indeed work with multiple user accounts. I also found that registered copies of Unsanity products and also iPulse remained registered afterwards.
