Product: Apple Remote
Category: Remote Controls
Summary:
The Apple Remote gives you total command of your music, photos, videos and DVDs from anywhere in the room. It combines with Front Row -- a menu-driven, full-screen interface -- to make accessing your Mac mini's digital bounty from any seat in the room as simple as navigating your iPod.
When you click the Apple Remote's Menu button, your desktop fades and Front Row's sleek interface takes its place to give you control over your music in iTunes, your photos in iPhoto, the videos in your Movies folder and whatever DVDs you want to play. Turn up the volume. Shuffle. Skip to the next chapter on your DVD. Play a slideshow, a home movie you made in iMovie, even a movie trailer. Just sit back and enjoy the show. [List Price: $29.00]

One of the other great things about it, Is that you can use it to control itunes in OSX by itself.
My remote wasn't very responsive when I first used it with frontrow.
I was thinking the battery must if been dead, even though it came straight out of the box.
We a little further investigation, I saw that Itunes was waiting for me to hit "agree" so it could start for the first time.
Do older mac minis have a built in infra red recieve to receieve these though ? |

Maybe Apple will come to their senses one day and release a Front Row bundle for older Macs. It could include the remote, USB IR receiver, and Front Row software. Until that day comes, we are SOL. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

I like that you can control other apps with the remote, but the coolest extra feature is being able to put your mini to sleep. I find it comes in handy when I need leave home on short notice. |

How good is the remote at browsing through say 1000 albums?
Is it going to take me an age to go and listen to the Zutons as i have to sift through all the other letters of the alphabet?
cheers all |

Scrolling through albums, artists and song is surprising fast in Front Row. |

So the remote is IR and not RF? I used one on a friends powerbook a while ago but I can't recall right off what interface it used...
I've actually got a RF "presentation" remote that has some other misc. feathers on it. Such remotes can be picked up for about $25 and could be a cheap substitute for remote-less macs _________________ Desktop * Athlon X2 4200 | 2048M RAM | 160G HD | 7600GT

If it was a MacBook Pro, it was IR.

I've used that one, and was quite impressed with the range and the mouse control mode. _________________ MacBook Pro 1.83GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD, Dell 802.11n card, 1.4TB external

It was the Presentation Remote from Keyspan. The little center button is a 4 way directional for mouse control. _________________ MacBook Pro 1.83GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD, Dell 802.11n card, 1.4TB external

| Ah, bummer. I have the regular one with my G4 mini. It won't let me browse by album but tunnel down to a specific song in coverflow mode so I have to do it through the front row hack which I like less. |
