Well, what they say is that they went for the Think Different approach. I think they thought a little Too Different and won't up with a product a little lacking on the feature side. _________________ Computer Engineer

I'll be buying the LaCie drive when the time is right. $$$.
I'd rather have better airflow than additional firewire ports. Buy a hub or a Cinema Display if you need additional firewire ports. |

I'm just wondering if it'd be possible to stick my own hard drive into this Lacie device |

Not easily. I have one and the top is near impossible to remove if possible at all. I suspect these are meant to remain sealed units and not user upgradable. I have sent a note to LaCie asking them about it but no response yet due to the Labor Day holiday. _________________ 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

From Support:
"The Mini is a brand new
product and we do not offer any assistance in opening this enclosure. We
would recommend that you exchange the drive with the reseller for the
size that you actually need. Again, you will void the drives warranty if
you open the enclosure." _________________ 2.0GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Well I bought myself a LaCie MacMiniMate and found out it is not that hard to replace the HD at all. The only thing which was hard was to get the power plug in the LaCie inner life out of the HD. I thought I would break off, but it was possibly just a wee to thick. With some silicone spray I got it done. I replaced the Hitachi Deskstar 80 GB 7200 rpm/2mb cache by it's bigger brother, a 160 GB, 7200 rpm, 8 mb cache and it works like a charm! If I need a bigger disk, it probably would not cause any problems to change again! _________________ ___________________Jim©

At least one of the other mini-style drives comes in a 0-GB configuration (just the case and cables, no software or drive) for those who want to use their own HD for whatever reason.

Good you had warranty. I replaced the drive myself and my firewire chip is broken, now I have a useless LaCie case... (which I sold without the AC power block/cord for € 25.00 just last weekend! I paid € 80 with a 80GB hitachi drive in it just a year ago and sold the 80Gb drive earlier) _________________ ___________________Jim©

| These do look very nice. Why did they stop making the 80GB model? That would be perfect for me... |

Just a rather small drive for todays standards. It's not likely they even make 80GB 7200 RPM IDE drives any longer. What is available is likely what is remains in the supply channel.
I bought a 160GB quite a long time ago for a very good price. Practically for the price of the enclosure. You may get lucky and find a new drive for a good price, or you may be able to buy a used drive for an even better price. These drives look odd when not under a mini. Some people may sell them do to the fact that they sold their mini etc.
The nice thing about the V1 models is they were all fanless. |
