I need some help! I just bought a nu2me 1.66 core duo mini. I was upgrading to 2 GB of ram, which seems to be fine (at least the machine recognizes the ram) but I ended up with several other problems:
1) when I opened the case I noticed ALL 4 screws that hold the chassis on were missing. If these are not importantt I won't worry about it, but if they are what do I need to replace them and where do I get them?
when I started the mini back up it was really noisy, seemed slow, and I got this warning that my hard drive was full, even though I can only find enough stuff on it to be half full. So I took it apart again and found a couple of screws that would fit the chassis. This time when I went to put everything back I noticed the following:
2) the wire end of the airport antenna is unhitched and I can't figure out where it goes
3) there is a little ribbon cable (copper colored) at the back of the machine that came undone. I can see where it goes but I can't get it to seat. Is there a trick to this that I am missing?
Maybe my calling is not a computer mechanic
Thanks for any help--I'm sort of dead in the water right now. |

I don't what to tell you about the screws. I guess Apple would have them.

It connects near the back right corner of the AirPort card down on the motherboard.
Look at this picture. It's the only wire there in the back

You just need to press down on in a little bit. Then work it back and forth from left to right with the ends of your fingernails. That's how I did it. |

Well, it didn't work. I got everything hooked back up, plugged it in and now it doesn't work at all. It has power, but doesn't spin up, the optical drive doesn't work and I get a big in the middle of my screen. Any ideas? |

| Sounds like the interconnect board has come out of it's slot. This is the vertical board where the audio ribbon cable you plugged back in goes, as well as where the cdrom and hard disk plug into. Simply push down (gently) on this to verify that it is seated in it's slot. |

That is what the problem was! I figured it out last night but then ran into a problem with my modem so I couldn't get back on line. Now I seem to have narrowed my problems down to 2:
1) Since I can't get the USB modem to work (it worked earlier but not now) I'm trying to set up an airport network with my G4 iBook. When I get to the screen with "share your connection from" and "to computers using" the options are greyed out and I can't select anything. What am I doing wrong??
2) I'm still having the problem of a full hard drive message. I have an 80 GB drive. When I "get info" for the HD it says I'm using about 79.8 GB. When I "get info" for the individual items in the HD it adds up to about 44 GB. This would be consistent with the amount of drive space used on the computer I migrated from. What can be taking up all this space and how do I get rid of it? I think I have seen a thread about this before, but I can't find it now.
Thanks. |

| Perhaps there is a partition you are not aware of. Open Disk Utility and check. |

| Nope--it only shows one big drive, no partitions. |

| I would really be tempted to just put the original memory back and exchange it. You clearly received an improperly assembled unit, and aside from the problems you have currently, i wonder what else QC missed besides the four screws and a loose antenna. |

because the screws are missing it may not be able to hold the internal frame in place and not all of the pins on the drive interconnector strip are connected. |

Thanks for all the help on this. I ended up reinstalling everything which seemed to cure the full HD problem--go figure. I had to do another reinstall a few days later when the mini developed a terminal freeze--told me I had to restart and would never restart. The last install has been stable for the past week or so, so I'm hopeful it is cured. Eventually the modem started working, seemingly of its own free will. _________________ Mac Mini 1.66 Core Duo

Glad to hear everything is better and hopefully no more freezeups. In retrospect, I wonder if the "full" hard drive was related to cache/scratch files that you wouldn't see unless you were using software that would allow the Finder to show hidden files. A reinstall would clear those files, but you can also use a maintenance utility like Onyx to do this. _________________ Mini 1: 1.83 ghz Core 2 duo, 4 gb RAM, 320 gb Seagate 7200.3, miniStack with Seagate 400 gb

Hai,
I'm facing the same problem as you since the day i opened up my Mini to take out the RAM. After tat It's extremely slow and the fan noise very loud. I've missed out 1 of the 4 main screw that hold the chassis. Another problem similiar to yours is the airport antenna is unhitch.
Actually how you solve the slow respond of your mini and the fan noise?
Thanks. |
