HandBrake 0.9.1 Released

The HandBrake team has announced the release of HandBrake 0.9.1, a new version of their popular DVD to MPEG-4 converter. According to the developers, "This minor update squashes a number of glaring bugs. Most notably, HandBrake will no longer hang at the end of encoding MKV files with chapter markers. This means the Animation, Bedlam, Constant Quality Rate, Deux Six Quatre, Film, and Television presets are now usable."
Other improvements include:
- Impressive performance enhancements
- Significant interface prettification (Mac more than Win)
- Color subtitles now show up in color
- Changing dimensions in Picture Settings no longer causes a crash (Mac)
- Forced subtitle support
- More robust exception handling (Win)
- Closing the main window no longer causes HandBrake to crash (Mac)
- nUsing "Slow" deinterlacing no longer doubles the chapter count
- MPEG Stream support is now case-insensitive (.VOB as well as .vob, etc) and more compatible
- No more error messages sent to standard out instead of standard error
- Bigger buffer for the activity log (Mac)
- Proper display of fading subtitles
- On-completion options to shutdown, suspend, etc (Win)
- "Same as source FPS" now works correctly when the end-credits of a progressive film are interlaced
- Add-to-queue fixed (Win)
- Target size fixed for the umpteenth time (Mac)
HandBrake 0.9.1 requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later. The download weighs in at 5.9MB.

| I see the performance increase, I reached 111 fps peak, on my Mac Pro, Quad 2.66. |

I wondered when they were going to get the MKV fix out. I just mentioned this the other day in the HTPC forum. It's also nice to hear about the extra performance gains, especially considering the last release was such a major leap forward. I'm looking forward to my next rip. When is Transformers coming out again?

There are other ways to rip stuff, but I probably wouldn't have either.
By the way guys, I don't notice much of a speed increase with 0.9.1. |

Same here. My progression goes like this:
I bought an iPod, my first Apple product since the IIgs in 1988.
Without the iPod, I wouldn't have bought the Mac mini.
Without the Mac mini (and Front Row), I wouldn't have bought the Apple TV.
Without the Apple TV, I wouldn't have needed faster wireless speeds, and wouldn't have bought the Airport Extreme.
Without the Apple TV, I wouldn't have realized I need more raw power for encoding, and storage of media, and bought a Mac Pro.
I guess it really is a gateway device. I love Apple. |

That was peak performance, and it really depends on the dvd, for me. For that dvd, I hit 111 fps peak, but it averaged 90. I'm ripping at 2000 kpbs, 29.97 fps, x264, aac audio, everything else default.
It's weird, I will average 90 fps on some dvds, and 70 on some others. But I love that even when all 4 cores are maxed out at 100% for an hour or more, the Mac Pro never makes a sound. Never. |

I would probably chalk that up to different forms of encryption. |

It also depends a lot on the content being encoded. |

That is pretty impressive. I must admit that I thought it would be a little higher. My friend actually does like 145-155 fps with a single 2.4GHz Core 2 Quad running HandBrake in Vista. The settings are pretty much the same as yours. Has anyone here ever tried running HandBrake in Boot camp for a speed comparison on the same machine? I wonder if the Windows version of HandBrake rips faster when all things are equal? |

I used to average about 15-20fps on my 1.83 iMac. I always rip with: .avi/H.264/AC3/1750Kbps/2 B-frames/weighted, now I am averaging 20-30fps! I absolutely saw an increase. ...And I've been able to rip DVD's I couldn't before?!?! I suppose they've updated the different encryption types as well...
