|
|
Hi All
I love my little mac mini to death but I seem to be having a funky video issue that for the life of me I cant figure out. A few times a day the screen will flash a light shade of blue and sit there for about 30 seconds ish. I dont even know if I am explaining it right but its not a monitor issue I know that much because if I try and load World of Warcraft on the mini in window mode the screen flashes blue on and off about every 5 seconds. If I full screen it the game runs fine but in window mode it freaks out.
I did update the drivers so I know that should be fine. Like when it flashes blue the screen like fades out to the blue like a transistion is going on or something. I have 512mb of ram in the mini and I really dont have an idea what would be causing the video issue. I tried lowering the resolution and it still happens.
Like I said though it even does the flash to blue when I am just like surfing the web or something and it like sticks for 30 seconds ish.
If anyone has heard of this it would be a big help. Thanks a lot. |

You haven't upgraded your RAM at all, have you? Weird stuff like this is often caused by defective RAM. There is actually a full suite of tests on the Tiger and Panther DVDs that you can run when you boot from them.
Does your computer do this if you aren't doing anything with it? Like if it just sits there for hours? _________________ Computer Engineer

| Yeah it does. I'll try and run the ram test and see if that is the problem. I did upgrade the ram so it could be the problem but it just seems kinda odd. |

I would bet you $10 that it is the problem. If you don't want to deal with the tests, just replace the old RAM and see if that fixes it.
Do you remember if it did this before you installed the RAM? _________________ Computer Engineer

I actually dont. So I put the DVD in and booted from it but I dont see any place that actually lets me test the ram. Am I missing something?
Ah I see what I did wrong... the hardware test isnt on the tiger disc. |

On the quick test everything passed. I am going to run the extended test now and see what happens.
EDIT: Extended test everything passed... so what gives? |

i'm no expert, but i'm betting that
a) its the ram
or
b) your monitor just doesnt make the mini happy
pop in the old ram and see if it still happens, if it does, it's not the ram so we can rule that out. if not, you're pretty safe to assume its bad ram. If you can I would try and place it in another computer (a PC would seem to be the best/easiest option if you have one that supports that kind of ram) _________________ 1.25 Ghtz MacMini

Doesn't mean that the mini can handle the type of RAM you are using. The Mini can only use PC2700 RAM. And I'll bet the Mini is still pretty picky on what types of PC2700 RAM you can use. Do a search here at the forums for the RAM most people have found works best, there are lots of threads dealing with it.

| well it is 2700 and it did pass the ram test 10 times or more. Could it still be the problem though? |

That's strange... I am not sure what's doing it now. Although some people have reported that certain types of PC2700 RAM were still unstable with the Mini. Perhaps it could be something strange with your video card, monitor, or both? _________________ Me with Woz!

have you experienced a kernel panic? (The screen will dim down, and inform you that you need to restart your computer in 4 different languages, no OK button or anything) i had one of those the other day... but i know what the problem was... kinda funny to see that little screen.
if not, i'm guessing the ram is fine.
i'd still like to guess that the mac doesnt like your monitor. maybe that's not the case. See if you can try another monitor. if that solves it, there you go.
[edit]
btw are you using a CRT monitor? there have been some reported problems with older crt's and the mini. mine works fine though... i guess i'm lucky

Just an aside, but some of the Mac mini come with PC3200 memory. This has been noted other places. The memory controller still clocks the memory the same as it would PC2700. Mine came with 256 MB of PC3200. |

Agreed.... The mini can run any speed-rated memory ... it will work fine at the Mini's 166mhz bus x2 = 333mhz ... as long as the memory is rated for 2.5Volts.. now if you put some OCZ VX/Plat Rev 2 in there which requires nearing 3 Volts... then it won't perform at all _________________ Computational Media Major Student @ Georgia Tech
