Carbon Copy Cloner 3.0 Released
Tuesday, September 18, 2007
Posted by: Glenn
Bombich Software today announced the release of Carbon Copy Cloner 3.0, a new version of its popular backup and cloning utility for Mac OS X. According to the developer, the new version features a new interface designed to make the cloning and backup procedure more intuitive and more responsive. Users have better control over what gets backed up, and are provided with detailed information about the progress of their backup.
Other new features include the following:
- Support for block-level disk-to-disk clones.
- Synchronization built-in, not bolted on.
- Support for backing up across the network to another Macintosh.
- Advanced scheduling capabilities -- Backup tasks can now be scheduled on an hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly basis, or you can indicate that a backup task should run when the backup device is attached (e.g. an iPod).
- CCC recognizes iPods specifically, allowing time for the iPod:iTunes synchronization to complete.
- The ability to drill down into folders to select exactly what gets copied and what doesn't (you can drill down indefinitely).
- Built-in software update feature notifies you when updates are available.
Carbon Copy Cloner 3.0 requires Mac OS X 10.4.8 or later.

Every time this topic comes out it reminds me that I really should be using an external 3.5" via FireWire as the Mac mini's main drive instead of that slow internal 2.5" drive...
But then again, is it faster to have a slow 2.5" via PATA or a fast 3.5" via "slower" FireWire 400?
I'm sure someone tested it (and I've probably already read it) but I'm too busy doing other things right now... *cough*something Extreme*cough*.
Not to mention that I'm only waiting for Leopard to become available so I can upgrade my Mac mini from G4/1.42GHz to Core 2 Duo/1.83GHz, which means I'd have to do it all over again in a month or two.
And since the Core 2 Duo uses a SATA drive, then my mod would have to be with an external 3.5" SATA drive, with no downside to the mod (except having a miniStack paired permanently with my Mac mini). I think I'd also need a new miniStack model if only for the power supply connector of SATA drives.
Completely off-topic now.... anyone using 7 or 8" LCD VGA monitors? What brand/model do you use, and why? |

I used CCC a lot when it was in version 2.3, which worked flawlessly for me. But I haven't yet used it in version 3 and I haven't used any version on an intel mac. I haven't found many user reviews of it, either. I hope some come out soon. Several people reported problems with the beta of 3; I hope these have been solved. _________________ Mini 1: 2.3 ghz Core i5; 8 gb RAM, Corsair 240gb SSD, 500 gb Seagate XT

The new GUI is awfully pretty. I like that it has scheduling, image support, etc. I'll have to test it out a bit this weekend, but on paper, it's a seriously nice upgrade. Bombich will probably get some money from me for it _________________ MacBook Pro 1.83GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD, Dell 802.11n card, 1.4TB external

| I switched to SuperDuper and never looked back when Bombich stumbled getting a Universal version of CCC out. I haven't been following the betas, but it might be time to look back. This looks sweet! |

I'd be interested in knowing if people see speed differences. When I tried the latest CCC 2.3 and beta 3.0, the beta seemed to be much slower, and was apparently using a different helper process. I eventually bought SuperDuper!, so this is really just academic interest. SuperDuper! seems to be much faster in "smart backup" mode, slightly slower in an initial "erase and copy all files", but this could be hardware- and contents-dependent.

I'm about ready to clone to my LaCie mini. I'll time it. |

| This is definitely something I need to start doing. In the past, I've just used the back-up software included with the external drives with limited success. From the responses so far, this sounds like a good place to start. |

Having a bootable clone certainly has advantages. Some of the backup utilities have the advantages of multiple backup versions, compression, encryption, CD/DVD media, etc. It'll be interesting to see how well Time Machine works when Leopard arrives.

I'm going to say that SuperDuper! wins in both of those departments. Well, at least it does with my hardware. My initial "erase and copy all files" clone is going with incredibly slow with CCC 3.0. I remember SuperDuper! being much faster the first time around. |

| I just ran a test with SD and CCC, backing up 100GB to an external firewire HD (LaCie) took 1hr 56 mins with SD and 1:58 with CCC. Both are bootable, doesn't seem to be much in it. |
