HandBrake 0.9.0 Released
Sunday, August 19, 2007
Posted by: Glenn
The HandBrake team has announced the release of HandBrake 0.9.0, a new version of their popular DVD to MPEG-4 converter. According to the developers, this major release includes almost 300 changes to the code base. Some of the top new features include:
- User experience is improved through a re-envisioned Mac interface and a Windows interface that’s been rebuilt from the ground up.
- Picture quality is improved through better image scaling, better deinterlacing, new filters for denoising, deblocking, inverse telecine, and new presets devoted to high quality settings.
- Speed improvements due to updated copies of x264 and ffmpeg. This includes improved multi-threaded encoding for the iPod.
- Compatibility is improved through new presets for devices like the iPhone and PSP. As well, HandBrake now supports DTS as an audio source and has limited support for .VOB and .TS file containers as input. Most excitingly, HandBrake can now output to the Matroska (MKV) file container.
- Stability has been improved due to countless bug fixes. (Including audio drop and mp2 issues). Handbrake also has optional support for MP4 files larger than 4 gigabytes.
HandBrake 0.9.0 requires Mac OS X 10.4 or later. The download weighs in at 5.5MB.

We still don't have movies or TV shows on the Canadian iTunes Store.
Without Handbrake I would never have bought an AppleTV! |

I don't use MKV, but that's probably exciting news for some. I'm almost halfway through ripping Wild Hogs. I can't wait to see what the output looks like. It does appear to be ripping at a much higher speed. I'm averaging like 115 fps on the first pass. The source drive is my LaCie mini. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

That is an awesome FPS Curt.
I think I'll rip something right now .
I like the MKV container, I think it is very high quality. Too bad it is so funky with it's compatibility. _________________ MacMini 2.0GHz C2D (2009)

While we are on the subject. Let's post our favorite settings.
-Format: AVI
-H.264 Video/ AC-3 Audio
-Encoder FFMpeg
-2 Pass Encoding
-1500-2500kbps Average bitrate (depending on movie type)
Constant quality 90% (not sure on this setting)
Picture settings (I don't mess with these)
Nothing heats up my mini like this app does! _________________ MacMini 2.0GHz C2D (2009)

I like the new interface. It reminds me of Camino every time I look at it.
Everything has been going great so far. |

Nope. I'm only 18 minutes in, but it looks and sounds great. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

| I agree with the comments about the new interface. But maybe they could do something about the icon next time around. It's starting to look at little dated. It really needs to be aquafied in the worst way. |

Me either. And we have those movies and TV shows here in the United States. I think Mr. Jobs should cut these guys off a huge check for helping with his hobby. Could you imagine how much lower Apple TV sales would be without Handbrake?
I can't wait to test 0.9 with my Core 2 Duo mini later in the week. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

Am I correct in reading that this version will only be in cli for 10.3.9? Pretty hard for some of us to use that!

I would imagine that it's for 10.3.9 or higher. I believe 0.8.5 was listed the same way. _________________ 14" 1.25GHz G4 iBook (died)
