|
|
Well i did it.
I finally figured out how to run boot camp from a external hard drive. No i don't mean using a usb piece of junk drive. At all.
THE BOOT CAMP EXTERNAL DRIVE TRICK.
Warning: this is a tutorial using linux allthough this works with windows in this tutorial we will be talking about ubuntu linux but windows functions as well
THINGS YOU WILL NEED!!!
- A Intel mac mini/imac/macbook
- The latest boot camp beta from www.apple.com/bootcamp
- A windows/linux install disk
- A cd-r
- your mac os x system on a external drive. (you will understand why soon)
Here are the steps to run the latest version of ubuntu linux/also works for windows.
1. Go online and download the latest iso of ubuntu linux from there homepage
2. Burn the iso using disk utility
3. Once finished go and download the boot camp beta from apple and run the installer
Now this is why this works.
Apple's key text's for boot camp allow the os to be booted from any device except external hard drive's. Now we all have heard of the windows hack which allows windows xp to be run off of a usb hard drive. Doesn't work very well for vista though. And we also know the boot camp beta assistant won't let us boot on a external hard drive. Well i bypassed this with a trick not a hack no illegal software mods nothing like that at all.
Here is what you do install your operating system on a internal drive and install mac os x on a external reverse the flow. Now on to the rest of the steps.
4. Once this has finished installing use carbon copy cloner and copy your internal os to your external hard drive placing mac os x on your external.
5. Once completed boot mac os x from your external hard drive.
6. After you have completed this step time for disk utility.
Disk Utility Instructions follow to the letter...
1. Open disk utility
2. Select the internal hard drive
3. partition the internal hard drive with these setting's.
4. Select the partition tab for your internal drive.
5. Select option's.
6. Select master boot record to boot a ms-dos or intel machine.
7. Partition the drive with a ms-dos file system
8. once completed the internal is now ready for windows/linux
Installing Ubuntu linux.
Inside mac os x insert the linux installation cd go into the system pref pane and select startup disk once that is done select the linux cd it will state forein os dont worry select the cd and restart the computer the system will then boot the Installer.
Troubleshooting:
When i install ubuntu linux on my computer it gives me a operating system driver error for the wireless card in my macintosh.
solution.
Don't worry about that error nothing to worry about ubuntu linux just has a issue because the wireless card is a locked firmware device all though the card still works it will just always say that error because of firmware.
After i install ubuntu linux my computer will not return to the mac os x operating system.
solution:
make sure you do not have one of the new apple keyboards for some reason holding the option key on start up doesn't work on the new keyboard but on the older white keyboard no issues.
Once i return to mac os x it say's it cannot read the disk do you want to ignore or format.
Just ignore mac os x doesn't understand the partition of the drive.
I will be posting a youtube video in a few days to better show off this.

Comments and questions.
1. Good job on the video.
2. Ubuntu is pronounced "oo-BOON-too".
3. What kind of external enclosure are you running? I dig the blue light.
4. Are you sure the option key is dead with Boot Camp 1.4 during startup? I mean with the new Apple keyboard. _________________ 1.42GHz Mac mini

Yes the option key is dead when using the new apple keyboard this is because apple needs to release a firmware update to fix this issue.
The external inclosure i am using is called a metal gear II inclosure it is a cheap incloser sold at re/pc here in washington.
They have two stores one in seattle and one in tukwila washington.
You can find them online at.
www.repc.com
You might be able to even call them at ask them if you could order something from them i do not know if they would but it couldn't hurt. |

That external drive is sweet, but that sucks that they are only in Washington.

Metal Gear enclosures are pretty common. I've seen them all over the web.
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of them. I'm still convinced that Oxford based chipsets are the most reliable and compatible with Macs. However, I do have an Initio chipset enclosure which is fine also. _________________ MacBook Pro 1.83GHz Core Duo, 2GB RAM, 250GB HD, Dell 802.11n card, 1.4TB external

Be careful with this suggestion! Yes, you are quite right, this is the usual way to pronounce the word, but its a word that many African regions/groups/tribes pronounce and/or spell differently.
I remember reading that Linus Torvolds was ambivalent about the pronunciation of "linux". Shouldn't be surprising because he was an ethnic Swede and Swedish speaker who grew up in Finland, where, of course, Finnish- a language entirely, even fundamentally, different than Swedish is mostly spoken, although the Saami people of the north speak a quite different language(s!). He learned English in school and led linux development as an international effort, eventually moving to the U.S. So you see, to insist on a single narrow, correct pronunciation of linux is not really in the international spirit of things. Even more so the case with the pan-African term Ubuntu! Just my 2¢ |

| Well done. I may try this on my new mac mini to take full advantage of the higher RPM and size of the external, rather than trying to squeeze the partition onto the native drive. |

Does this method allow linux to make use of full graphical acceleration? Does it use the i810 beta driver? _________________ Mac mini core 2 duo 2.33/2 GB RAM/160 GB 5K160, Dell 20.1" wide-aspect

Another comment/question. I cannot boot the Ubuntu LiveCD (prior to taking all your aforementioned steps). I am afraid that if I go and wipe out my internal hard drive, format it, I still won't be able to boot into the Ubuntu CD and then install. Did you run into this at all? _________________ Mac mini core 2 duo 2.33/2 GB RAM/160 GB 5K160, Dell 20.1" wide-aspect
