I wonder why the MiniStack V3 kit is priced so much higher than the V2 and NAS kits. There is like a 40-dollar premium for it. I just need one for a SATA drive, but this model appears to be for PATA drives like the V2. That leaves me with the V3 again. I realize that it uses different technology and includes eSATA, but the pricing seems to be out of line. |

These guys have very obviously created a drive that they are trying to market to Mini owners. Just to recap, that's a Macintosh Mini which from its very first incarnation has been fitted with Firewire.
So in addition to the Ethernet connection they've provided........ a USB port.

NAS that powers down with the computer makes no sense, it's supposed to be available for your whole network. Also why even put the NAS underneath your computer? If you keep only on and for the computer it's under, why no just attach it with USB or firewire?
They should have just made it white and promoted it for Airport Express. |

Why do you think the USB port is there? You can use this for network storage via Ethernet or direct storage with USB. The power down feature is obviously for USB. When used for network storage, it's connected to your router. Turning off one computer on the network isn't going to shut down the drive. I agree that it's not important to have a NAS underneath your computer, but it should look nice with your Mac mini and save some space. Especially if your gear is close to a router. I've been looking around for a NAS for a while. This one lacks Gigabit Ethernet, but has NDAS going for it. It might go on my short list. I would really need to read more about it. Anyone know where I can RTFM? I don't see a link to one on NewerTech's site. |

This drive sparked some interest in me last night. I began searching around and found out that it's similar to the Nexstar LX.

Guess what? They make them in white and black. I'm not sure if they include the NDAS technology though. Which, by the way, sounds like something that I would want to have. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

Come on now advertise to a Mac market where all lines are gigabit equipped and the Airport Extreme Base Station is gigabit equipped and make a 10/100Mbps device. Where are the gigabit devices? _________________ "You must control your future by taking command of your present, and fixing and learning from your past."

Yeah, but Apple just added Gigabit Ethernet to the AirPort Extreme. These things take time to work down. _________________ 1.25GHz Mac Mini / 1.8GHz iMac G5 / 2.0GHz C2D Mac mini (2009)

LAN
* Speed: 100Mb/s over Ethernet, 480Mb/s over USB 2.0.
* Connection: Proprietary Driver Solution
* Maximum Access: Up to 20 simultaneous connections*
*Simultaneous Write access for up to 20 PCs is possible, Write access for Macs is limited to a single user at a time. Best performance in PC environment is obtained with fewest connections.
Not much of a benefit as a NAS device in a Mac environment... |
