I thought HDTV required 16:9 
Anyhow, your Sony should be able to switch to 16:9 leaving black (or gray) bars on top and the bottom of the 4:3 screen, showing a true 16:9 letter boxed version of the AppleTV. As long as you watch true 16:9 (anarmorphotic) video clips, you will be fine with this setting. However, if your original movie was 4:3 you may end up with a pillar box with bars all around the screen. 
There are various settings with "Handbrake" but if you just want to go with Apples iTunes clips your results maybe unpredictable just as with an 16:9 display as well.  |

As I know, sony hdtvs can play with correct size, if your original movie was 4:3.

isn't HDTV always widescreen
Of course you can play back 4:3 content on a 16:9 display - with black bars to the left and right of your screen. Vice versa anamorphotic 16:9 content may be viewed on 4:3 screen with black bars on top and bottom of the screen as long as your TV is able to switch to anarmophotic widescreen mode (we don't have any 20th century tubes in our home to verify). By the way, I haven't heard of a 4:3 HDTV screen at all and it seems to be against the definition of HDTV. |

My 4:3 TV is "HDTV", it can take 480p and 1080i signals. However it doesn't have a widescreen/letterbox mode, nor does it switch into letterbox in either 480p or 1080i.
I wish the AppleTV had a 4:3 TV setting. |
